How to talk to someone you like?

The obvious; There’s this boy I really like. He’s pretty shy, and genuinely nice. I asked him the other day that he should text me, it’d be nice to talk. He gave me his # and we chatted for a bit today. I asked a friend of his if I have a chance with him, he says He doesn’t see why not, he doesn’t really have a type. How do I go about this? I really like this guy and I just want to talk to him and work my way up with out seeming overwhelmingly obvious.
