How do you shorten a music file (mp3)?

The dance group that I’m associated with wishes to use a certain mp3 music file, but it’s too long (4 min.). What’s the best way to shorten it to around 2.5 or 3 minutes? Ideally, I would like to do a fade out at the end, instead of cutting it off suddenly.

Try Audacity, it is free and lets you make simple changes to audio files without any hardcore audio editing skills.

Yup, I would use Audacity.
Audacity is a free mp3 (and other format) music editing software. Oh. I see that’s what others are saying. Yep. That’s the way to go. It has a fade out function, too.
I’ll have to look at Audacity. I’ve used Gold Wave, which is a paid program, but the “free demo” version is so accommodating that I’ve never used up my time on it.
Cool! I’ll try Audacity. Thank you all for this info.
