Why exactly did the cat sit on the mat?

I really need to know? It’s urgent, if I don’t find out, I might be scarred for life, or worse.
Please, could anyone explain why the cat sat on this mat, not that mat.

It is my belief that it sat on the mat in order to get a good view of the chicken as it crossed the road, but then the reason why the chicken did that was a puzzle to the cat.
the cat sat there because his human told him not to.
@Shippy it was intrigued as to why the chicken had already done it so wanted to see what the fuss was.
@Shippy I now wonder how the elephant knew it was the chickens day off. Did it email it to let it know? Is there a rota that they follow and we do not know about?
It sat on the mat because it is much too precious and important to lower its furry bottom onto the cold tiles.
You know, I haven’t been able to develop a workable theory for this yet, but I quite enjoy how Professor R. J. Canning explains it.
The cat sat on THE mat to mark it with its essence.
The cat sat on THIS mat because it wanted to mark it with its essence.
The cat didn’t sit on the THAT mat because the cat had previously marked it with its essence.
Because The Cat in the Hat was already sitting on that mat
Your cat had to sit on this mat
So they could throw rocks
At the Fox in Sox
Who was stalking the chicken crossing the road
Because the mat was already in the exact spot the cat wanted to sit anyway. What self-respecting cat is going to let a mat change alter its decision?
Same reason why hussies have big pussies…I fink.
@ucme Possibly that only rhymes in Scots speak!! I have a lot to look forward to, I can see loll.
