Did you ever have a lucky charm?

Asked by Shippy (10020points) December 26th, 2012

I never really believed in them, but a few years ago was given some Chinese coins on a string. It certainly was strange in that my purse was always full! I realize we are talking about inanimate objects with no powers. But are we?

What has been your lucky charm? Or what traditions do you use that bring good luck (if that is part of your culture). Or something akin to good luck.

I find too when I wear red, I do get lucky (that way and all ways!!)

None that ever worked. At times I have kept a rabbits foot, a ring, and even “lucky underwear” for dates, but I found most of the time they were unlucky.

More a keepsake than a lucky charm, I carry my father’s dog tags on my key ring.

Yes. It was magically delicious.

Not really.

When I was a kid I had an imaginary friend. She was a fairy named Magalyn and she gave me some magic keys. They were some old keys I found lying about in the old unused garage at our home. I always kept them tied together with a piece of yarn or ribbon, and I used the keys to “travel” to different enchanted lands.

I still have my keys, and when I am having a particularly hard day, I find it cathartic to wear them around my wrist and jangle them.

My Dad had a lucky penny in a holder that said “Keep me and never go broke.” It worked.

I have a blue glass Willendorf venus that I carry in my purse. Also a round, translucent quartz rock.

I am not superstitious but I had a strange little talisman of sorts that I used during my surgeries. It was more a reminder that people care than anything luck-related, but it made me feel good, so in a way it was a lucky charm for me.

My mom spins yarn for a living and has made friends online with many of her customers and fellow spinners. Some of these people are closer and kinder to us than many of our “real life” friends. When I had my surgeries she took a hiatus and explained what was going on. One friend knit me a stuffed pickle about the size of my hand. There’s a reason for it being a pickle that I don’t feel like going into here, but it’s still as funny as it sounds. I loved that pickle and it was the perfect size for squeezing tight when nervous or in pain.

@Seek_Kolinahr I’ve always wondered, when one has an imaginary friend. Do you see the person? I’d love to know if you would care to explain.

Sure! I absolutely saw her, at least in my youngest years. Perhaps it’s a delusion of memory, though. I obviously never thought about it when I was 4–5 years old. But my memory of her is very visual.

She had greenish skin and deep blue hair, and her wings changed colour depending on her mood. They were more like dragonfly wings than butterfly wings – wide and transparent. She was dressed entirely in leaves and vines and had flowers in her hair.

In retrospect, and I didn’t think of it until just now, she was probably loosely based on the fairies in the Four Seasons part of the Disney movie Fantasia, crossed with my own interpretation of the elves in Lord of the Rings. my dad and I read The Hobbit when I was four and it quickly became a favourite.

She didn’t make many appearances around other people, though. I would talk about her to others, so she was no secret, but we played privately.

@Seek_Kolinahr I find the whole thing quite fascinating.

I made a kitchen witch from yarn that I keep in the corner of my kitchen to protect the house, and a porcelain Chinese dog stands guard in the front hall.

I don’t believe luck is determined by ‘charms’. I do live in a house numbered 88. I hope when I come to sell buyers who do believe in such things will pay a premium. I might be dreaming though.

I have a few! I am quite superstitious and over the years I have collected things that I considered to be lucky. I am well aware that it is probably just a placebo but it gives me some comfort.
