Well, this is a conversation that needs to be had or we will be right back in the same place in a month when a crazy guy does the same thing. Guns are a issue that need to be discussed since we are clearly doing it wrong.

So we need to figure out a solution and when we think we have a good one we need to let our elected representatives know what we think would help.

I have sent letters and gotten responses. Have you?

@jonsblond :: I own a gun. I know most are responsible. It is just bullshit you can get a 30 round clip for a AR-15. Maybe if the nutter had to reload some kids could have gotten away and wouldn’t be dead. You don’t need 30 rounds to shoot dinner unless you are Michal J Fox..

If this were an ordinary time, we’d be modding several of the gun questions as duplicates (or near-duplicates). Since this is all a very recent thing in response to the Sandy Hook shooting, we’re allowing all the discussion people seem to want and/or need. If history is our guide, I’m sure it will taper off pretty soon. Which is kind of unfortunate, since the problem(s) won’t be solved in 30 days.

@johnpowell Yeah. I agree with you. Just tired of hearing from city people how stupid and crazy gun owners are. And I don’t even own a gun, but living where I do (on a farm) it would be helpful.

The problem is that however many gun questions we have, whether 7 or 700, it will dwarf the number of questions about how to deal – effectively, if not permanently – with the crazies in our societies who don’t much answer to laws or administrative restraints of any kind.

And that’s unfortunate because it seems that the crazies get crazier and more numerous with every news cycle.

So who’s going to call it and give out the prize?

@CWOTUS Yes I think you are on to something about being disinterested in dealing with the actual crazies instead of banning objects. If there was an honest dialog about incarceration it would certainly involve putting tons more convicted blacks behind bars…..longer if not indefinitely. Something that would not flow well here or at any other liberal catering -to place. Having that “R” word tossed out right off the bat would be a sure way to kill any serious discussion.

It seems that the law breakers comfort takes greater precedence than the safety of the general population.

Maybe it should if a reply brings a second reply about the same thing therefore qualifying as a switched topic? And no cheating to inflate the numbers. We should be able to see if that was the intent of the asker right?

@woodcutter, it’s long past time to talk about the total, abject failure of the “War on Drugs” and the exacerbating effects that this has had on all of the perceived problems we’re talking around: more guns on the street; more lethal guns, too; more “criminals” (because drugs are illegal, after all), protecting turf from other criminals and themselves from the police and arrest – and other drug “criminals” who would kill them – as well as more corruption in law enforcement, too.

In addition to which, locking up drug “criminals” puts them into academies of higher learning for crime. We’re creating graduate-level violent criminals out of people who do “something we don’t like”, but which doesn’t otherwise affect us.

@CWOTUS If someone hurts another violently, then they are no longer drug offenders if that is what they were before that. We also need prison reform while we are on this but there isn’t much motivation to make things better for inmates.The sentences are not long enough for violent offenders and the overcrowding problem has much to do with that. Not incarcerating minor drug offenders could help with that.
Prison reform. One more way such a topic can morph into the gun debate.

@woodcutter I still think it is a white thing. I think certain white people feel themselves under siege by blacks and hispanics. I think they see the world is out to get them or whatever. They have this fantasy that they need guns to protect themselves and this “Real America” that they understand and people like me don’t.

Pointing out that one time some Asian guy shot some people fifteen years ago or that there was also a spree killing in Uganda one time does not make me change my opinion that there are great many white gun owners who are very sick inside walking around who think the world is out to get them. Nor does mentioning that poor people shoot other poor people. It just makes me appreciate how very strange and angry the world looks to some individuals.

I know, right? I wish I could find the statistics, but I’m assuming that the majority of gun owners are hunters (and another assumption of mine is that the majority of hunters are white). I’m surrounded by hunters where I live. Everyone owns a gun. The last time I checked, not one person was purposely killed by a hunter! Even accidents are rare in our neck of the woods.

We should count all the new movies being released this month that the story hinges on gun violence and violence in general. I know these were in the works months or maybe years ago but they are sure popping them out one after another lately.

@WillWorkForChocolate That movie is about something historical, violent as it all was. Someone was bound to cover this and more probably will. The fiction stories that are coming off a blood conveyor belt just seem over abundant this year. Even TV, this one called “Justified” really? It’s just bad TV. So we have run out of interesting subject matter to do? We get guns, tits, and ass. Tits and ass are fine but the parent nazi’s and all their decency standards seem ass backwards.
