What does "fair trade" mean to you?

Asked by burntbonez (5202points) January 6th, 2013

These days there are all these fair trade products being advertised. Mostly coffee and chocolate, or at least those are the ones I notice.

Does that really mean anything? Who gets to decide if a product is fairly traded? Do you pay attention? Do you care? What does the term “fair trade” mean to you?

Without going and researching products, I would assume it means the producers of the thing I am buying were paid a fair price for their goods. I would buy products marked ‘fair trade’ over those not if the choice was offered and the quality was comparable. I do care and I don’t want to see people being exploited so I can have cheap goods.

A friend of mine owns a coffee shop that is fair trade only. You do have to get certified and meet certain standards. If you want to know more about fair trade business in the USA check here

Fair Trade means that the supplier and processor of the producer have a fair arrangement where the supplier is fairly paid and the produce makes a fair profit without burdening either the supplier or customer
