Do you have a favorite meal you don't get to prepare often because your SO doesn't like it?

Asked by jonsblond (44316points) January 8th, 2013

If so, what is it? How do you handle this dilemma?

Mine is potato soup. hmph!

My husband does…bean soup. He just made it a couple of days ago, but it was probably 6 months since he’d last made it. He loves it, but I am not a fan.

Duck with orange sauce. I’m the only one who eats it so I lose the motivation to cook it.

It’s not so much a meal as certain ingredients—I like spicy stuff, I would like to use turnips, parsnips, fennel, mushrooms and a bunch of other things that my wife or children don’t like. I make a dish with tuna and cheese and mushrooms that I can’t make any more.

Steamed clams or mussels are a favorite of mine. I have them now and then, but not usually with my SO.

I don’t eat sweet potatoes, and my wife doesn’t eat creamed corn.

We have them both once a year…on Thanksgiving Day.

Turduken, not because no one likes it, but because it takes so dang long to prepare it correctly. My girlfriend is allergic to peanuts, so I don’t eat peanut butter anymore.

Shepherds Pie with peas and carrots (although to my mind, if it doesn’t have these, it is not Shepherds Pie).

Aw – just get rid of the guy. That’ll solve the problem. :-P

I love making Chinese food at home, but neither my hubby nor my kids really like Chinese.

Tuna noodle casserole! Yumm. But I haven’t had it in years :(

livelaughlove21's avatar

Yep. Fish and anything with veggies.

He also doesn’t like Chinese takeout. Freak of nature.

WestRiverrat's avatar

@janbb What if the guy is the one doing the cooking?

janbb's avatar

@WestRiverrat Sadly, then you don’t get to eat all his good cooking any more.

Poultry. I love chicken and turkey, but my wife doesn’t eat it. This is why I usually order chicken if I eat out.

Also, bar-b-cue. My wife doesn’t like this either. Also a favorite if I eat out.

Anything with shellfish. My husband won’t eat it. So what do I have at restaurants? Oysters, shrimp, lobster, scallops, calamari!!! Yumm!!! If he goes on a business trip I cook it at home for myself.

Pachy's avatar

HA! You’ve hit on the very reason I don’t have an SO. ;-)

jonsblond's avatar

@janbb The only reason why I wouldn’t mind being single. I can eat whatever I want! ;)

filmfann's avatar

I make a bbq chicken my wife hates, and my kids love.
I made it about once a week, but now that the kids are gone, I don’t get to any more.

This thread is funny…it makes me think of something my friend Lucy said when she was a newlywed. She told me that her attitude with cooking was “Eat it or wear it!!!”

janbb's avatar

@jonsblond Yeah – I actually eat what I want and have lost weight and kept it off.

El_Cadejo's avatar

There isn’t really anything I can think of. She is a vegetarian and I’m not, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to cook myself up a nice steak or some other meat.

Haleth's avatar

Anything with cheese. No matter what kind or how delicious, he’s not a fan.

He’s an AMAZING cook, though. Totally makes up for it.

Trance24's avatar

Since there is only two of us it isn’t often that it is inconvenient to cook us both something we like. I don’t really eat nuts anymore because my SO is allergic.

@Haleth I feel so sad for you….no cheese, for me there is no life without cheese. But like you said at least he is a good cook.

DigitalBlue's avatar

Tons. My husband is the most finicky person I know, I find it hard to manage to keep or prepare foods that I like very often, because he won’t touch most of it.

ucme's avatar

Takeaway, any fucking takeaway…the wife’s favourite cooking ingredient is napalm, bless!

tedibear's avatar

My husband is not a fan of meatloaf, so I don’t make it. Or at least not often. I also let him make the marinara because his is excellent and I know he wouldn’t like mine.

rojo's avatar

@Earthgirl GA! I have a friend who has a sticker on her refrigerator that says:

Todays Menu – Take it or Leave it.

Earthgirl's avatar

@rojo That’s good too, slightly less aggressive , but then, Lucy was a feisty little redhead and I am not sure she was just joking, lol. At any rate, she wasn’t into subtlety!

In the movie Today’s Special the chef puts a sign in the window saying “Todays Special: TRUST ME!”
