Why does iTunes insist that there is not enough space on my phone when there is?

I have the latest version of iTunes and a 16GB iPhone 4 with the latest version of iOS. I am trying to sync a few songs to the phone. I went into the music tab, selected my favourite genres and selected apply then sync. It’s 4.55GB, 910 songs. The bar at the bottom tells me there will be 5.22GB remaining.
When i sync, after a moment iTunes comes back and tells me it needs another 1.92GB.

The songs may only be 4.55 GB, but what else is being synced? Maybe it’s overhead, more likely other non-song data that it thinks needs syncing.
BTW, is it the Windows version of iTunes, or are you on a Mac? The Windows version isn’t exactly reliable, so that might also be it.
Windows.
It’s syncing 100mb of photos and 1GB of apps and 1GB of “other”.
I’m having the same problem. I have a 30gb phone and haven’t added any large new files, in fact I’ve deleted a bunch of stuff. Every time I try to sync I’m told that I need another 3.32gb although my phone and my itunes library show I have 9.56gb free. I haven’t been able to sync my phone since this last update.
I’ve had a message on the Apple community for weeks with no help.
When on the summary tab of my iphone, I made sure to select the box (Convert higher bit-rate songs to 128kbps) and right after I stopped having this exact issue. Idk if that helps anyone else, but figured it was worth a shot since I was having the same problem and it was driving me crazy. It told me I couldn’t fit 1300 songs on my phone (prompting me to free up 6GB of more space) while showing that I had an available 3.5GB of free space left after selecting all the songs I wanted to sync (meaning 3GB of space vanished?). Now I’ve fit 1800 on here without an issue. Hope this works for ya.
