Sighed and got mad at my mom for forcing me to enroll somewhere I didn’t want to go.

The Culinary Institute though, that’s great, I would have been excited about that!!

My reaction was meh. But I’m not going to any special college or anything, just going through the motions, building debt and getting a piece of paper to say I know what I already knew.

Congrats though, CIA is a great school, I had a couple friends who attended there.

Congrats lady. Knock them out. I opened my letter, thinking it was a rejection letter, and said hey I got in.

Congratulations! Enjoy your studies.

I was a mature aged student who really doubted my own abilities so I was amazed and thrilled. I can’t recall crying but I was absolutely over the moon.

Congratulations! Hope you do well!
With me, I was just relieved.
I applied to five and got accepted to four so I had backups.
The one I really wanted was the one that took the longest to get.
I was within days of accepting one of the others.

First of all congratulations! What a happy day for you. That’s a great feeling. Best of luck to you in pursuing your dreams!

I remember being very happy. For me there weren’t very many other options for getting into Fashion Design so if I hadn’t been accepted it would have been crushing. There weren’t many schools that my parents could afford even if I took out student loans (which I did). I was very lucky to be going to college at all because my father had gotten laid off in my senior year of high school.

I actually had to apply twice. Once to get into the school I wanted to go to for the first 3 years of Liberal Arts and intro courses in my specialization of Clothing and Textiles and then secondly to get into a one year program for Fashion Design. If I hadn’t gotten into the Design program that I applied for I don’t know what I would have done. It would have been like 3 years leading up to a total setback in my goals. Not exactly all for nothing…but I felt like that at the time. I mean, I didn’t want to be a Home Ec teacher. When I got accepted into The Fashion Institute of Technology I was thrilled! I had had to take a test and have an interview and the program was very selective. It was thrilling and a bit terrifying at the same time.

I had so many things to overcome to get to that moment. In my second year of college I got Hodgkins Disease (cancer of the lymph nodes) and had to take a leave of absence. I came back to school and continued my studies after one semester. I give credit to my parents and family for supporting me through it all.

Remember one thing always, never let anyone shrink your dreams! Someone once said that to me in high school and it really stuck. You have to believe in yourself even when no one else does. You have to keep believing in yourself through all the struggles and inevitable failures. And when you start working and things get tough (they can get tough) just remember what you got into it all for. Don’t let anyone ever take that away from you. That is what keeps me going through thick and thin.

Huzzah!!!! Congratulations. So glad to hear that the confusion with the admissions officer didn’t get in the way!!!

I don’t even remember what it felt like when I was accepted to college. I was so stressed out and overtired from my senior year of high school. I knew that I would be accepted to a college, at least, so I wasn’t stressing out about that—more about which college would give me the most money.

I do remember how I felt when I was accepted to grad school. I was a very good candidate on paper but because of how departments and advisers work, I guess I didn’t make very good selections of which schools to apply to for my field, and I was rejected from every school but one. Of course, I only heard back from the final school a month after all the other ones had rejected me, so for one horrible month my last semester of college I thought that I wasn’t going to grad school and was just going to go back home and live with my parents. The night that I got the email, luckily I was alone in my dorm and I started screaming in happy gibberish. I ran downstairs to my best friend’s dorm just beside myself, and we took care of a bottle of whiskey. :)

I just got into Tampa yesterday. Nobody was home when I found out. I was really excited and proud of myself. I said “cool” and moved on with my day.

I know the feeling. :) I reacted much the same way when I found out I got into Stanford. It was surreal. There were definitely some tears; I had to tell my parents right away :D

Congratulations, by the way :)

Congratulations @dxs. Very happy for you.

Congratulations and you will love mid-Hudson, I’ve eaten there a couple times.
I know several CIA grads and all are great chefs and two own their own restaurants.

I suddenly saw a door open up to my future. I gazed through it and saw infinite opportunities.

NostalgicChills's avatar

Thanks to everyone who congratulated me!

And @dxs Congratulations! :D

I think the reason I was so emotional about getting accepted is because this is the only school I applied to and the only place I REALLY wanted to go. I visited the campus, and I didn’t fall in love with it because it’s beautiful, but because I felt so at home and like I was supposed to be there.

I was in a haze. I am stunned I actually even completed the form and mailed it in to apply. Life just moved in a series of putting one foot in front of the other and just walking blindly, unfocused. I had been going to community college, my dad was really pushing me to go away to a university. He took me to two schools and I really liked Michigan State. I only completed my application to MSU and I go in. Next thing I knew I was leaving for school. I left a long term boyfriend, although we did not break up at that point.

The whole thing was surreal. I don’t remember crying, I took the acceptance for granted. I never though in terms of being accepted or not being accepted. I had cryed a lot of months before applying, I was fairly depressed and confused about the future. I finally decided staying on the path I was on was not getting me anywhere fast. God knows what would have happened if I had not been accepted.

@dxs: Congratulations to you too!

@NostalgicChills : That’s really cool to hear. What a wonderful way to begin college.

NostalgicChills's avatar

@bookish1 Yeah :D
I seriously can’t believe this is happening and that I’m graduating in 5 months and going to the school of my dreams. Oh man this is so awesome.

Yeahright's avatar

@dxs Congrats! Nothing beats the feeling of getting to go where you really want to go.

I wasn’t as happy when I got in as when I got out! That’s when I felt that sense of relief.

First off… Congratulations to you!!

I first got into the Boston Architectural Center and was pretty pleased. I don’t recall any strong emotions though. Then, after I decided against architecture, I late enrolled into Mass. College of Art. I was relieved when I was accepted there as I didn’t have a plan C.

@NostalgicChills Just a funny story about when I went off to college. My mother took me and my sibs to my favorite restuarant on the day I left for college.I couldn’t decide on an entree, so she said get both. I did. Shrimp and lobster. God that was so so good.

muppetish's avatar

Congratulations on your acceptance!

My acceptance letter for undergraduate study wasn’t anything special. I went to a state school that wasn’t quite so prestigious, particularly for my field, but I was happy about it. What did bowl me over was when I was accepted to every graduate school that I applied to my Masters. It was a tough decision, but I made the right one… in staying at my little state school :)

livelaughlove21's avatar

Meh…I was happy, sure, but it was no surprise that I got in.

nicole29's avatar

Now that I think about it… I didn’t have much of a reaction at all. I mean, I was a little nervous opening the letters from different schools.. My heart kind of stopped when I got my acceptance, plus scholarship offering from Pitt (when I am at now)... mostly because I was shocked. But I’ve never been one to get really excited, so this isn’t totally shocking. Congrats, though, @NostalgicChills. Best of luck!

@Adirondackwannabe
Hey, Hakuna Matata right? That sounds awesome!

NostalgicChills's avatar

I just came back from a restaurant with my parents and the chef/owner is a CIA graduate! We started talking and he gave me a job offer!
Life is just so… great.

bookish1's avatar

Whoa, whoa, whoa, that is super badass. A job offer and you’re fresh out of high school? Imagine what you can do with a CIA degree.
Are you going to be able to work the job while you go to school?

cookieman's avatar

This is all wonderful @NostalgicChills, but can you bake cookies?

NostalgicChills's avatar

@bookish1
I’m not even out of high school yet! :D

It’s just a temporary thing so I can get the experience. I work at my dad’s restaurants in the kitchen, but It’s different when your dad isn’t your boss, so this should be new and exciting!

@cookieman Only the best! haha

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@NostalgicChills Hakuna Matata. it’s always good to get experience working for someone other than family. Good luck!

Bellatrix's avatar

Such an exciting time for you! @NostalgicChills. Very happy for you.

Brian1946's avatar

Congrats on your acceptance!

Will the CIA teach you how to gather intelligence on enemy chefs? ;-)

NostalgicChills's avatar

@Brian1946
Haha! Thats actually really funny! xD

lici92's avatar

I remember actually being nervous when I got the letter, and when I read it and found out I got accepted I started crying so hard. I think it was because I came to the realization that I was actually going to be leaving home, and that that was the only school I had applied for. I didn’t care or think too much of school throughout my high school years. And I also didn’t bother applying to any backups. So it turned out to be a mix of emotions. I am now in my third year, and all is well. Good luck to you! :)

NostalgicChills's avatar

@lici92 Thats exactly how I felt! And that was the only school I applied to because it’s the only one I want to go to.
Thank you :D
