Have you got any fire hazard and fire control advice?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21680points) January 19th, 2013

Today in Mallorca we are having a festival, it is the day of the devil, aka the day of St. Anthony.

Today is the longest night of the year. According to legend and tradition, the nights are getting longer and longer because Satan is trying to destroy our crops so that we starve.

Later tonight, when it gets dark, the town people will take to the streets, and light about 50 to 100 large fires, between 1 meter and 5 meters in height, they will bang pots and pans, and generally make loud noises to “scare the devil away”, so that our crops are saved.

Seeing as most of the town is going to look like a flaming war zone, it is probably wise to brush up on fire safety.

So, what fire safety advice do you have?

Make plans to be somewhere (anywhere) other than Mallorca?

Give your house a defensible space. If it catches fire, or there is fire near it, the firefighters always make a quick judgement call as to whether the house can be saved. Make it look like you tried to give them a chance to save it.

Take anything of value and put it in storage (well, it might be too late for that) or at least in your car for a quick get away.

Have your garden hose ready and don’t hesitate to use it if you see any sparks or embers. Be very vigilant.

Don’t get drunk.

Folks who have a forest fire barrelling their way will hose down the roof and exterior grounds near the building ahead of time. If you have anything flammable outside hose it down.

Hmm. At first I thought you were asking for fire safety devices, not advice. We have smoke detectors and heat detectors that call the fire station if they detect these things. So I suppose you could install a system like that. That would be my advice.

In addition, I’d keep the hose attached to the spigot so I could easily spray water on areas that catch fire.
