Do you like having long nails?

Asked by Shippy (10020points) January 22nd, 2013

I personally don’t. They get in the way of all sorts of things, contact lens application, face creams gets stuck under them, and body creams. Plus the upkeep is laborious. But more than that, how many germs are up there? all snuggled together like prickly cretins.

Every second woman has the french manicure, which used to be classy, now its a uniform. Then they have those acrylics, which are so expensive, and needs fills and things. I think it is the germ aspect I hate the most. How about you, are your nails your best feature. Do you have tons of nail polishes in different colors? Or do you prefer them clipped and clean? Men which do you prefer?

(Guy here) I don’t find them at all attractive. In general, when I see that a person has somehow hobbled him- or herself for the sake of appearance (e.g. long nails, stiletto heels, bum-baring pants, etc.), that’s a red flag that the person’s priorities are way different from mine.

There used to be a time when I did but I was less sexually adventurous then. These days, because I like my fingers going into sensitive places, I cut mine short.

Haha…funny. I JUST cut and filed mine down yesterday.
I like the way they look at a medium length but I do waaay too much outdoorsey stuff to have pretty hands. I do like getting a french manicure for special occasions, but otherwise no. Long nails just snap and break with all the gardening, raking, and housework I do.

I grow them just beyond the fleshy ends of my fingers. That’s an attractive length, and anything longer is just annoying and inconvenient.

I have just one bottle of nail polish, and I’ve used the same color for years and years. It’s just a pale and neutral shade. I prefer to have my nails done by a manicurist. Because of some recent financial and time-demand changes, however, I don’t do that anymore.

I laugh about “French” manicures, because they’re not French at all (no more than German chocolate cake is German).

Coloma's avatar

@PaulSadieMartin Well…whatever their origin they do look nice.
I have tons of nail polish but I rarely polish my nails, I DO polish my toenails faithfully all summer.

Shippy's avatar

@Coloma Oh yes, for a special night they can be nice. But day to day living no thanks.

I keep mine just long enough to pick up a coin off of the tabletop.

I prefer clipped and clean but I can rock the nails when necessary, which isn’t often. I like the nice nails on some women, but it’s certainly not for me- I do dishes, I change my own oil, I roll around with my dog and the neighbor kids, and bring in wood, and other manual jobs.

It also tends to add age to women or make some look younger, you know the 60 year old’s with pink nail tips and black hair tips, it just looks all kinds of crazy to me, and I think there are plenty of other ways to spend money that make more sense.

I have only tried acrylics and once french manicures.

They were nice but gone in a flash and the most mundane tasks I had to relearn and a couple got ripped off. OUCH.

I keep mine natural medium length. They are strong so it looks ok. In the winter shorter because no matter how much oil I use they dry out and get brittle.

In the spring fall and summer they go through bursts of longness. But I am active so once one breaks they all get chopped down.

I sometimes use light glitter nail polish because they don’t show chips as much. A lady recommended it to me. On occasion I will polish my nails when I have an in house spa day. Or when I am in the mood it usually comes off the next day though.

Au Natural is the most practical and common wearage for me. I like my nails even so they are usually pretty.

Toe’s last longer are worth the extra sparkle and bling. But I only paid for one actual pedicure.

@Coloma And German chocolate cake, with all that gooey coconut-pecan topping, is no less delicious!

After a German person told me that the cake has no origins in German culture, I looked up its history. During the 19th century, an American named Sam German developed a type of dark chocolate for baking. A homemaker later created a cake recipe and named it in Mr. German’s honor. The recipe was published in newspapers. The cake was so yummy, it quickly became a national staple. So, no Germany at all, but a recipe that remains very popular to this day.

I make a point to keep my hands and nails looking pretty, so I have regular Mani/Pedis. Average every 10 days. But if it gets in the way of stuff I have to do I drop it. I keep mine medium or short. Usually wear deep burgundy nail polish or French. I have a lot of nail polish but never do my own nails. Keeping my hands and nails looking good is important for no other reason than because I think it looks nice. I find myself looking at men’s and women’s hands when I’m talking to them, if they keep them nice I notice it right away, if they don’t that’s OK as long as their finger nails are clean. The same applies to toe nails.

Mine don’t look good long unless I’ve got acrylics, which I’ve had in the past. I keep them short and clean, no polish. I think most long natural nails look a bit…creepy? I’m not sure of the word, but I don’t find it attractive at all.

^ You mean natural long nails look bad but long acrylics not so bad?

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Yeahright Yeah. I mean, some ladies can pull off the naturally long nails, but I just don’t like how they look.

I personally like naturally long nails (acrylics, in my opinion, look stupid). I don’t mean to brag, but I know I can pull them off. People are always complimenting my nails (men and women alike). I always make sure they’re neatly filed into a shape and painted. Mine used to be, admittedly, too long, but that is because they’re really tough and strong and difficult to cut (and I was fourteen and too stubborn to go through the hassle of trying to cut them). Now, I force myself to cut them – they’re still long, but look a lot more natural than before. Some people look like they have long nails simply because they cannot be bothered to cut them; at least in my case I really look after my nails (as well as the rest of my hands) so they don’t look gross.

I like having nails, period, which is why I have acrylics. My natural nails are so bad that if they get just the slightest bit longer than my finger, they rip off, painfully. I’ve even experienced snagging a nail on something so suddenly and hard, that it ripped my fingernail halfway up the nail bed.

I’m also a horrible nail biter. Having acrylics keeps my nails from causing me pain and keeps me from biting my nails. I do keep them clean, though. I scrub the undersides with a special brush, almost every time I wash my hands.

I hate long nails. My perfect length is about 2 to 3cm.

Yeahright's avatar

@livelaughlove21 I know exactly what you mean and I agree. To wear your natural nails long, they have to be really nice, otherwise go acrylic, they’ll do the trick!
@tranquilsea I’d consider 3cm-long nails quite long tho. You sure you have the length right?

Ela's avatar

Yep, I love my natural, medium to long nails. I usually just wear clear or sparkly polish.
When I go out, I’ll match them to the color of my toenails (I like dark burgundy).

Yeahright's avatar

@Ela Dark burgundy is my fave color on toenails as well.

Unbroken's avatar

@Ela and @YeahRight. Dark burgundy is my favorite color for toe nails as well. Good choice.

tranquilsea's avatar

@Yeahright crap I meant mm.

Yeahright's avatar

@tranquilsea Hehe thought so…good thing I gotcha covered :)

tranquilsea's avatar

@Yeahright Thanks for that :)
