Why this need to have another dog?
I lost my dog 3 months ago. I had him for 16 years.
I keep looking on rescue sites to adopt another dog. I’ve been doing this for awhile now. Why this need for another dog?

Because you miss the companionship and unconditional affection which you enjoyed for 16 years. It’s hardly surprising, that if you enjoyed and loved your dog, that you’d now have an emotional void in your life that you’d like to once again have filled. I’m sure there is a dog out there who’d love to fill it and could use a good home.
Because for 16 years you had a cute fluffy friend who was always there who loved you unconditionally and constantly wanted your affection. Now you miss it, of course. Fill the void. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.
I have a fat cat and he’s alright. ;) He needs a buddy, though.
Same here, @Mama_Cakes. For me, it’s because I know I could provide a loving, secure home for another dog, but my heart is still a little sore from losing my 13 yr old boy a few weeks ago. It feels selfish not to go adopt another and let them have some love and affection. My little Mona dog is loving all this attention though…lol
@Mama_Cakes I think kitty love and dog love are different. Sounds like you are happiest with a little of both. Maybe your cat misses canine companionship too?
Such GA’s above, can’t add anything better. I do know that feeling. Just go get that new puppy. The little dog you lost will look down, grrrrrr once or twice, then give a few happy barks and be happy for you.
Everyone needs to love and be loved, what better love is there than a dog’s love? It’s unconditional and they are also a lot of fun.
You already have several pets that I know of, dogs and cats both, right?
Maybe you are looking for something new and exciting in your life and looking at animals for adoption is a way to evoke something fun, new and exciting. I have always been an animal lover but did recognize times when adopting a new pet was more about a whim due to boredom. Not that any pet has ever been cast off, that has never happened but….I did have the self awareness to see that getting a new pet was kinda like a high, and I am proud to say that my impulsive pet addiction has been in remission for about 10 years now. haha
Well…I was talked into taking home a rooster a few years ago and then had to adopt 3 hens for him. lol
I only have one cat. No dogs, currently.
@Mama_Cakes I’ve been doing the same thing since we had our little Sierra put down the day after Halloween. (((HUGS)))
@Coloma Good for you, I could easily be an animal hoarder (like Ellie May on the Beverly HIllbillies!) because I love them so much. I’m trying hard to stick to my little lapdog, Mona, who was a rescue four years ago, and my two beautiful birds.
They were all a little neglected while my old boy was sick the last few months, and like you, I recognize that the new-ness is like a drug, I don’t have to rescue everybody personally- lol
@KNOWITALL Yes, I agree. Of course rescuing animals is far more rewarding than rescuing people. lol
Because life without a dog is worse than a life without sunshine!
Please take your time and keep looking. What you’re doing is “window shopping” for now. When the time is right, and when you find the dog who fits you perfectly, you’ll know it. I truly believe that animals adopt us, not vice versa.
You may be getting ready to be over your mourning period. You’ll get there. And you’ll fall in love again. Your eyes will meet the eyes of your next love and there won’t be any question. Give it time
I have a magnet on my refrigerator that says “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole”. I cannnot think of a better way of expressing my opinion on why you feel the need for another canine companion.
