Whats a good way to refer to the group of gods that make up a poltheistic system of beliefs?

Asked by Foolaholic (5804points) June 10th, 2008

I’d like to have a word that sums it up. I’m working on a sentence to the effect of ” the (this special word I’m looking for) like it that way.”

One word that sums up “celestial power orgy?”
Hmmmmmmm. Wouldn’t the word “gods” work there?

@kevbo nailed it. Good thing, too… I was about to suggest fluther.

@kevbo and robmandu; if i were to call it a pantheon, would that strike you as too Greek? I’m afraid of having the connotation of that word…

Its where the term probably originates (or with the Romans), but I think it’s applicable and accurate across religions. I can’t think of a better word.

@foolaholic, I tried a cursory thesaurus search for pantheon, but got no real alternatives. Much of the English language is based on Greek, so I think you’re stuck (stuck, that is, with the possible misinterpretation of your reader to think you mean only greek gods.)
