If you were asked to make a TV documentary, what would it be about?

Asked by TheProfoundPorcupine (2549points) January 29th, 2013

Just say you were invited to make a TV documentary and it could be about any topic that you liked, what would you choose?

For me I admit I would end up making one connected to my archaeology and the Romans in Scotland, but I would look at certain sites and explain how we know different things about them rather than just saying that they were at a certain part of the country between certain years. I would also make sure that it was fun and interesting for children in the hope that they would learn from it and would then like to go on and learn more in their spare time.

So what would you make?

I’d really like to dig up the dirt, so to speak about how the internet impacts peoples lives. Mostly focusing on relationships and mental disorders. Any kind of relationship, the friendships we make and the people we start to care for. I would like to also chart illness in high users as opposed to none users, including eye site, sex drive and that type of thing. It is such a huge topic so I realize as I write this I would have to choose a few main areas to focus on.

I would also like to take as part of the documentary a high user and a more sporty outdoor type and let them switch for a month, then get feedback on that.

How it impacts on issues like self esteem, can it be classified as parental abuse of children for example, and their absenteeism due to high usage. But focus on not only negatives but the positives too. I am sure though there are more negatives for most people.

Fun question @TheProfoundPorcupine. I was already going to make an audio documentary about my dissertation, but I could make a TV documentary as well O_O

@CWOTUS Thank you for that thoughtful answer. I cannot contain my excitement at watching it as I am sure it will result in a bidding war between several channels for the right to show it.

The voyeuristic nature of insects, that’s right…it’d be a fly on the wall documentary.

I’d do one on our changing high streets. Well known shops have been closing left right and centre due to the impact of on line shopping. Where is this trend leading and can anything be done to stop it? Is it a bad thing?

The long-term affects (effects?) of child abuse, and how people overcome them.

I would love to do some digging into government waste and ways to stop it, with an added bonus of how to collect from people and companies who don’t pay.

As a part of the ongoing series, I would include suggestions on how proper management of resources could solve the world hunger issue once and for all.

Richard Rorty.

@bookish1 Might I ask what your dissertation is about? If it’s too unique a topic and thus an identifying characteristic, or just annoying to try to explain to people who have little context to understand your reply – no worries; I’m just curious.

The romantic, albeit slow moving, love life of Bassett hounds.

Something about horror movies. I’d like to do a documentary on the history of the zombie movie genre, as well as the slasher genre. And if some of these do exist, it would be cool if someone could point some out to me. :)

@Symbeline There’s Going to Pieces, a slasher movie doc, but I love this offering from a brit film critic.
Really knows his stuff, slightly annoying it’s in 5 parts, but well worth a watch…enjoy.

@wildpotato: It’s a bad ass project but that is all I can say about it.

I would like to look at relationships – romantic and friendship based – and examine the reality vs. the Hollywood version. What is the true impact that idealized relationships in the media have on our own relationships?
