What are some warm cities with a mix of urban/suburban life?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) February 4th, 2013

It’s so cold and it’s snowing all the time. Not to mention in Ohio it can go from 60 degrees to 10 degrees the next day =\ So I’m sitting here daydreaming about WARM places I would love to live if it weren’t for the high costs and being far from family!

I like Los Angeles but it’s so expensive and has terrible traffic. I wouldn’t live there unless I had a ton of money to live in Costa Mesa lol.

I heard San Francisco is very city like, trendy, and more for single life.

San Dieo seems nice but too laid back for me.

Hmm…what about cities in FL??

Austin, TX. It routinely ranks among the top cities in the country for [you name it]. It will be more affordable than anyting in California or Florida. Our traffic sucks, and it’s much too hot for me in the summer, but it’s perfect otherwise.

SF is just as expensive, if not more so, than L.A. L.A. has affordable areas if you are willing to live with minorities. Oh, the horror.

Having grown up in Florida, I feel qualified to say “Yuck!”. I am rather fond of North Carolina, however (here in Durham we have 4 large universities, a tech-savy development area known as the Research Triangle Park, the most successful theater venue in the country, and outdoor activities like hiking in the mountains and hang-gliding at the beach within just a few hours’ drive).

Well, we have little Tokyo, Chinatown, K town. Or just live on the valley or south L.A. Best city in the world.

If you do not like the lifestyle, don’t move here. There is not much I hate more than when people choose to live here and then complain about it. L.A. Living isn’t for the faint of heart.

@syz and I agree on Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina as a great set of warmer cities. If you have a larger budget then windward Oahu (Kailua or Kāneʻohe) is idyllic,

If cost is a factor, forget the West coast. Just put it out of your mind unless you think $850 for a 2-bedroom apartment with off-street parking is a good deal.

Florida isn’t bad to visit, but there are enough wannabe bad-asses there that I could never live there again, at least not near Orlando or Miami.

Houston, TX maybe? Or Charlotte, NC? NC does get kind of cold in the winter, and maybe a couple centimeters of snow, but it doesn’t linger long.
Ft. Lauderdale, FL? Tampa?

Nashville, TN definitely has a mix of big city and small town, plus it has the cache of the entertainment business. Might not be as warm as you are wishing for. My sister lives in Raleigh, NC and loves it.

Washington, DC. It can get very cold here during January and February, but the winters are usually brief and not all that brutal. Spring and autumn are spectacular. Summer gets wicked hot, but I can’t say that I’ve ever really minded.

Charleston South Carolina. Greenville North Carolina. Atlanta Georgia.

I live in a suburb of San Francisco, and I love it here. But for affordability, Raleigh Durham seems to be highly rated on all fronts.
