In a few weeks I am finally setting sail! well flying actually. New life, new start, new country. I have heard of people having a bonfire to get rid of things that maybe hold them back emotionally to the past. Have any of you done this or similar?
I really am wanting to let go of a lot of things. I need to leave things here and move on. Any experiences appreciated, or thoughts or ideas?

It would be easier if you chose just one thing to burn rather than build a big fire. Invite significant others to tell what this means to you. Drink toasts. Eat the special foods that are exclusive to where you are living now, for the last time. Give away anything else you’re not taking, because someone can use them. Say good bye, and leave.
I did it once where I had put things down on paper for a while. and then had a small fire and burned it in the barbecue grill. It was a releasing act, and I felt very much like I had moved on from that phase of my life.
Thank you both @zenvelo yes I have heard of this.So it sounds like a good plan :)
I have written things down that I needed to let go of then burned it. It’s really fun and symbolic if you use flash paper.
This brings to mind the song Barbecue by Animal Liberation Orchestra:
The road is long and windy,
Like a good mystery unfolding
It twists and turns
In colorful subplots and sunburns
And fake out endings
And sometimes my patience in the whole process starts bending
As I attempt to unravel the web
By rehearsing and reversing and perversing and traversing
Along the doubt laden extension chord threads
Of my life
And in this life we’re free to dream what ever we want to
But that doesn’t’ mean that your dreams are gonna come true
Instead as a way of getting us to move
Life dangles your dreams in front of you
And unable to resist the temptation
We continue
And it’s clear to me that this life is gonna be
All about the dangling possibilities that keep turning in and turning out
Yes it’s clear to me that this life is gonna be all
About the dangling possibilities that keep turning in…
The road is long and windy
Full of twists and turns
But before you can rise from the ashes
You’ve got to burn baby burn
Welcome to your Barbecue
Where we roast all the dreams that never came true
Welcome to your Barbecue
Pig out and dream a new
Welcome to you’re, welcome to you’re, welcome to you’re barbecue…
Anything you’re not attached to will be picked up by your local non-profit to help others, I’ve done it at least six times. I own a few things, but my things will never own me. Good luck, darling!!!
I went from what a large three bedroom bungalow can hold to what I could stuff into two suitcases. I gave away a lot to charity shops, left some with my ex wife and I have never missed any of it. What was all that junk anyway?
