From googling it looks like it is most likely English. There is also a connection to French possibly, but seems like origins from Brittain are the strongest.
It’s of French origin, deriving from a middle French word ”calle”, a kind of cap worn by clerks and valets. In France, the name is most common in the Vendée and Deux Sevres regions, along the central Atlantic coast.
Just adding that there was a substantial immigration from the Vendée to Canada in the 17th and 18th centuries.
My therapist is Jewish and that’s her last name. Just wondering if it was Jewish. Perhaps, her husband isn’t?
Callard does not strike me as Jewish, from Jewish names I know (of course I don’t know them all) but if you google there are people with that Surname who are Jewish who come up so maybe many people with that surname are Jewish? I’ll send the Q to some Jewish jellies, maybe they know. I think one jelly is from QC so that might be helpful.
Thank-you! I’m just curious.
You could ask your therapist. She is more likely to know the history of the name. People ask me the origins of my last name all the time.
