Windows 8: How does one copy a DVD?

I am trying to prepare a gift for a dear Squishy friend, and I’m having a heck of a time!

There’s a DVD I have, a DVD-R to be specific, that is a copy of a VHS tape. Clearly, not copy-protected.

I want to make a copy of this DVD. Yet, for some reason, I can’t figure out how to do it. The default programs included in my Windows 8 software don’t seem to be able to do it. It copies the information fine, but won’t write to disc.

Is there a certain program my lovely Jellies can recommend to get this very, very important information into the hands of my friend?

One way to do it is to copy the contents of the DVD to your desktop, pop out that DVD and pop in a blank, format it, and then copy the old DVD contents to the new DVD. (Putting the DVD into your DVD drive should launch the program that will allow you to do all this.)

You might try downloading a free dvd copying program such as one of these… and there are many others available, I believe.

Clicking on @Pachyderm_In_The_Room‘s list, I see ImgBurn at the top.

I would try that first. I’ve used it for CDs (don’t recall if I tried it for DVDs) and it was really simple.

One common problem I have encountered – if your first burned disc is a dud, set the write speed slower. The default max speed on many DVD writers seems unreliable.
