Have you ever asked a question for yourself to answer?

Asked by TheobromosHumper (443points) February 26th, 2013

Sometimes there may be something you really want to rant about, but no one ever asks about it. Have you ever asked a question just so you could answer it? If so, could you link to it?

I’ve never posted a question just for the sake of me answering it. I’ve posted questions that were things I wanted to get others insight as well as discuss my own views on the given topic, debate the possibilities with others, and hopefully by the end have a broader understanding of said topic.

No, but I have added my own comment, my own opinion at times, how I would answer the question. Sometimes it do want to get my opinion out there so to speak, but mostly I am interested to know other people’s opinion on the matter and have a discussion. Many times the answers are so interesting. Hearing the other point of view sometimes changes my original position. I love that.

Nope. That’s what blogs are for.

Now, when I get the urge to rant, I’ll look for a question that can help me understand the rant better, and ask that. Instead of ranting about stupid parents not minding their bullying kids, then whining when my kid smacks them down, I’ll ask a question about how to help discuss the situation with my son to let him know a) he’s not in trouble, and b) to discourage violence in the future.

It’s an interesting idea. I have not done it. I have, however, wished I could ask other people to ask questions for me to answer. I guess that’s kind of the same. Maybe when I get to know people more, I might feel comfortable doing that. But it seems like it might not be kosher to ask a question so you can answer it here. I might be wrong about that.

@burntbonez – We get three questions a day. I’ve been here three years and asked less than 80 questions. I’ll happily lend mine to you. Just PM me. ^_^

I’ve asked questions for one or two others, although I don’t remember which ones they were. I’ve never asked a question for myself to answer, and I may have asked someone to ask a question for me, but I don’t recall if it happened that way or not. Again, memory makes it impossible for me to provide links.

I’m not sure why you’d ask a question of yourself. I usually put my answer in the question details. Rarely will I provide an answer qua answer in the answers, if that makes any sense. I don’t know if it would feel different to answer my question as if I had not asked it, compared to answering it as the asker.

I’ve sometimes asked a question in order to share experiences, but not to rant.
I don’t do rant.

No. I’ve asked questions I have an opinion about but my reason for asking a question is to canvass other people’s ideas. I may not agree with them when they are given and may question those opinions but I still value the different take on the topic. That’s the whole purpose of me asking the question. I want to learn about different ideas on a topic and then evaluate them and see if they change or add to my own view and understanding.

I think the danger of having a rant is some people forget there is often no right answer. Just because the questioner feels a particualr way about something or that is their world view doesn’t make it the only world view or the ‘right’ world view. So if a rant is posted as a question, rather than a genuine desire to gather people’s ideas, the poster can end up being hurt or offended because others don’t share their views and tell them so.

I did once. But I’m ashamed just thinking about it.

No, i’d be afraid to get the answer wrong…err, yeah, that’s it.

wilma's avatar

No.
I have only asked 25 questions in 3½ years. I guess I need to step it up, eh?

Pachy's avatar

No, because the questions I ask myself are too embarrassing.

No.

I think I understand what you mean, @TheobromosHumper – if I am reading between the lines correctly. In a sense, aren’t all “questions” posted in Social and Meta a question for ourselves to answer, i.e., we’d like to know what people think about… – an how we feel about something. A sounding board. Reflectioon. Thinking out loud. GQ.
