What causes us to have a really crappy day, when nothing crappy has happend?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) February 28th, 2013

I’m just very down and unhappy right now, for no apparent reason. Nothing bad has happened today, but I’m still way off. What would cause that?

Internal maladjustment?

@gailcalled That occurred to me as I was posting that.

This is by no means a scientific explanation, only a personal theory, but I think we just get overloaded by all the negative flotsam and jetsam floating around in our personal lives and in the media and our brain or psyche or something in us temporarily shuts down.

Your attitude.
Your thoughts.
Rehashing the past and dreading or worrying about the future.
Taking things personally that aren’t personal.
Filtering things so that you don’t see the positive.
Magnifying the negatives.
Having weakened or compromised coping mechanisms.
Using substances that distort your view of things.
Addiction or craving.
Penury.
Sensory overload.

These are just possibilities that occur to me and not things taken from some authoritative cosmic master list. The good news is that nearly all of them are things you can do something about, at least with practice, if not with just some good applied awareness.

It could be a million things or sometimes I think we just find ourselves in a funk. You have mentioned a few health issues recently, it could be something, even minor, going on under the surface that is messing with your equilibrium. Perhaps you need some fresh air and sunshine, or to spend time doing something you always love doing (even if you have to force yourself to start). Perhaps spend some time volunteering with people less fortunate. It might just help to flip your mood. More seriously, you could be depressed so if this continues, you know the drill, see your doctor.

This happens to me very often as well. Some days are good, some days are bad. I don’t know if there is some explanation, but I think it’s the circle of life. If you look at life like a circle, there’s good and bad times but it always goes around again. I’m not sure how to explain it.

depression?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@blueiiznh I don’t think so but I’m watching out for that.
Thanks jellies. A friend picked me up a bunch.

I have to agree with @blueiiznh. My first guess is depression/anxiety. Add in a mid life crisis to the mix and you’ve got one sh*tty day. I can identify. Also, just being sick (like you’ve been this week) can really make you question everything in a way in which you wouldn’t if you didn’t feel terrible/scared.

@Kardamom I think it was just a crappy day. I’m much better today.
