Conspiracy Theories - Christians vs Obama: What are your thoughts?

Asked by iLove (2344points) March 1st, 2013

I begin this question with a heavy SIGH.

I am not a big fan of Social Media – my Facebook page has 67 friends, I don’t think I have ever had more than 100 friends.

I practice Buddhism but was raised Baptist.

Recently, a dear Christian friend of mine began a debate about the medical implants that are raising some fuss and how she refuses to be “bullied” into conformity. The post was very ambiguous so I dug deeper to inquire what the specifics were of her soapbox rant. Mind you, I am not one to ever engage in any type of conflict – especially on Facebook of all places. This person is one of the kindest people I know. But after reading more responses to her post, I became very concerned.

Politics and religion are my least favorite topics to discuss.

However, when I started seeing that some of the responses referenced “Mark of the Beast” and Obama is the Devil, I became very agitated. This is the very type of assumptions that Christians sometimes chastise others for – interpreting the bible loosely, etc.

Anyway, the information she passed along was found in these two articles. I really am at a loss to understand how this leads people to believe that Obama is the devil.

I was online today, and came across a clear example of the media twisting information for their own agenda. Please read the follwing articles, and you will see more reasons why people are getting so upset. Also, people often refer to snopes.com for the “truth”. Be informed by the snopes article below that they too are part of the machine:

I would love to her your thoughts on this discussion.

I think the Tea Party followers are becoming desperate. They run out of ideas so smear campaigns and circulating rumors and conspiracy theories is all they got left.

@mattbrowne I couldn’t disagree more.

Reasons:
(A) The zealous religious right is a small minority, hardly enough to cause that much of a wave, much less point to them as a significant sample.

(B) There are plenty of legitimate reasons for the anti-Obama sentiment that no one has to lean on “conspiracy theories” to express disdain. More and more Obama supporters are jumping ship every day with lamentations of “what have i done”

Plus, in regards to the general discussion, there’s a lot more at work here than just medical implants. Sure, it aligns with Biblical prophecy, as do a lot of other signs of the times. But Christian conservatives, by and large are more down to Earth than they are perceived in social media and the news. Persecution is increasing daily. Are Christians taking into account the correlations of end-times prophecies? Sure, But the majority are concerned with the same things everyone else is. The economy, health care, immigration, national security, foreign policy. Don’t be fooled by isolated incidents. After all, we can’t stop a freaking apocalypse.

@gambitking Come down to North Carolina, the teabaggers are all upset about “the dark colored skinned foreigner” in the White House. And there are lots of them, there are about 200 churches in my county and most are fundamentalist.

The major problem here is that the bill is too big (2700 pages) and too complex. To make it worse it references hundreds of other bills and changes a word here and there in them. It impossible for me to estimate how many bills would have to be collected to understand all the changes. As if that weren’t enough it also calls for the creation of 159 new agencies and hundreds of thousands of pages of new regulation. So to understand what all is in it, is an impossible task. We must take ‘On Faith’ what the experts tell us is in it. And even if you trust the experts implicitly, all those new agencies are there to interpret the ACA and create regulations that they decide are required to implement it. That may not be what the creator intended nor what the experts thought.

Frankly it’s a mess. If I was to say the ACA required everyone to have a unicorn shoved up thier ass, it would take a month to disprove that and most of us never could. So are there conspiracy theories out there? Of course. This bill will affect everyone’s life and there will always be some that think it will be for the worse. Frankly I am one of those but just for the record, I don’t think they’ll be shoving a unicorn up my ass anytime soon.

@mazingerz88 I wish you would not confuse right wing american evangelicals with the Catholic Church. The Tea Party and the Evangelicals hate the Catholic Church, and to confuse the two just gives more credence to the right wingers.

@iLove Your friend is displaying her ignorance and inability to critically think.

mazingerz88's avatar

@zenvelo My mistake. Didn’t think it through in the course of my hasty attempt in making up a poor joke. So thanks!

A lot of people think Obama is the Debil for many reasons. Jack Van Impe and several other preachers are incendiery about him and his many evil acts and what he will enact. Unfortunately a lot of Christians or people in general believe it, most based on the Bible’s end of the world predictions.

It’s up to us to use our brains and discover the truth. Personally I think it’s all crap that instigates fear. I still don’t like Obama much, but what’s the difference between the mark of the best, a chip since we all use debit cards and credit cards with our personal account information.

Any time someone uses fear to manipulate people, it’s time to take a second, third and fourth look at the facts. And welcome!!

@Tropical_Willie – I am from NC and so is the person in question.Other than the fact that he is “the dark colored skinned foreigner”, why do the Christians believe this hype? What I found most amusing was that “Snopes is in on it”

@zenvelo – sadly, she was someone I greatly respected – who was open-minded (or so I thought). I responded to her post on FB with facts about the “Mark of the Beast” as the Bible states it, and even found a Christian site that refutes this assumption and she quickly pointed out that it was “Close enough” and if “celebrities like Jamie Foxx are heralding Obama as the lord and savior, and people are replacing pictures of Jesus with pictures of Obama, then we do need to be worried”

I just think this is all so ironic! These Christians are the very ones instilling unnecessary fear and hatred. I even started refreshing my bible knowledge and some of the scriptures are in direct opposition to what they are saying!

Isaiah 8:12 (NIV) “Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it.”

Leviticus 19:16 (NIV) “Do not go about spreading slander among your people. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life. I am the Lord.”

Exodus 23:1 (NIV) “Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness.”

Instead of realizing the pragmatic, even convicting reasons why we have failed in so many ways to effect our culture, we accuse our enemies of cheating via conspiracy.

But why Obama? Why not Clinton or Bush or any former presidents?

Linda_Owl's avatar

@iLove , it is because President Obama is the first African-American to actually get elected as our President. Racists exist in every level of American society. I voted for Obama, but it does not mean that I approve of everything that he does or proposes…. but considering who he was running against, he was by far the best choice for President of the United States.

glacial's avatar

I think that part of the problem is that the segment of extremist Christians that is susceptible to this kind of story (i.e., this is a minority of a minority of Christians) is so in part because they are looking forward to the end times… so they are strongly motivated to see the signs all around them. For these people, even though the prospect of the apocalypse is horrific, it is also necessary. Whenever people want to believe a thing, and they want to be shown proof that their conviction is well founded, it becomes easier to manipulate their actions through stories like this.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@glacial I agree with you. Although I’m doubtful that Obama is either the Anti-Christ or the Second Coming- lol

Jaxk's avatar

@KNOWITALL

I assume you’re taking that on ‘Faith’.

glacial's avatar

@KNOWITALL I’m not at all surprised by that. :)

KNOWITALL's avatar

Sure, let’s call it faith. If Jesus came back as a black politician, I wouldn’t be that surprised, but I’m sure after a full term we may have seen a few signs of it either way…or not, who knows- lol

Michelle was in our state yesterday, it was crazy with about 1000 Mo State Troopers, but I didn’t see any protesters, which was a little odd with all the haters.

iLove's avatar

It sure has been interesting digging deeper into the information about this. I’ve spent half my morning trying to see things from the opposite of my perspective. I would love to hear from one of the believers in this theory on here…

Again, it saddens me greatly that my friend who I greatly respected is clinging to these beliefs. I guess that is the hardest part of all this.

@glacial – thank you for the great explanation.

flutherother's avatar

Are those opposed to Obama and universal health care so short of reasonable arguments that they have to make this stuff like this up?

flutherother's avatar

I don’t understand why they do it then.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@flutherother I know. I’ve tried to explain the tie between religion and politics from the conservative stance many times and just get attacked and ridiculed. Even though I don’t feel the same way, I am surrounded by people who do so I hear all about it quite often. :)

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’ve gotten into a few “discussions” with those wacky people. The can NEVER, ever answer the question I always ask and that is “What benefit would it be for the government to turn on their own people and lock them up? What would they gain?” They never answer that question.

Your links are an October 2009 article, a post from some unidentified site by a sparkymcbif and a snoops page that says your first link is not true. It amazes me how you can get so many comments and opinions from people here with those links. That, to me, is a miracle.

glacial's avatar

@bkcunningham My understanding is that the OP is quoting her friend (note the italics), and it was her friend who posted the links.

I’m guessing that you already know that it’s Snopes, not snoops.

cheebdragon's avatar

Snopes leans pretty far to the left…

iLove's avatar

@bkcunningham the items in italics are from the email I got from her. Her point was that the media and Snopes twists things to their own benefit and we can’t trust anyone. She used those two links as an example. The Snopes article she said was that they were “in on it” This turned into a conversation about “Mark of the Beast” on FB where I tried to interject with bible facts and that is when this thing turned into a mess.

I did more research yesterday and what I discovered is more outlandish assumptions about the bill. Even though the original bill did not pass – the one with the questionable language – there are some Christians who swear that this proves Obama is the devil and this is the mark of the beast. It really concerns me that these people continue to support their views and spread this propaganda – even though this is clearly NOT true.

Interesting Article Here

Even though the author clearly is Christian and comes up with a great viewpoint, she discredits her own opinion at the end by saying she is still conflicted. And the comments get weirder and weirder.

I guess I have been living under a rock when it comes to internet wackiness

iLove's avatar

@cheebdragon – True about the lean, but can you tell me what your point is? Does this discredit their information? I ask not to be snarky but genuinely so I can understand how the facts can get so twisted.

I am not an Obama supporter but I honestly cant see any relevance what the book of Revelations have to do with Obama. I had to read up a bit in Revelations and found nothing about any objects that will be inserted under the skin to create the number of the beast.
I think it’s a good thing to have some sort of medical implant that could contain all my information. It would help people who ended up in a accident and the information would be there to help them, I think it’s a good thing for old people with Alzheimer that when they wander off at least their families can be contacted easier due to an implant. Some people will refer to Obama as the devil because he is backing homosexual marriages as well. I am not a Christian but I think if a god did not wanted us to do implants than he would never have allowed us to grow into a scientific race. I think a god gave us the inelegance to invent things to help us. I would say it’s the next step in our evolution that we will enter-grade with machines.

SoulFish's avatar

@iLove My father always used to say, “if you want to avoid fights, don’t talk about politics or religion”.

Unfortunately, this largely holds true. I’m happy to see the people here being able to discuss it in a civil way though. In the case of Obama you bring out (at least) two breeds of ignorance. Republican extremists and racists. Sadly, both of those have a tendency to overlap with Christianity. Throw it all up on social media and you have a frenzy of idiocy. As terrible as it is i don’t think there is any more to it than that. everything else is just manfestasions of that combination.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Why is the Anti-Christ always an American?

NomoreY_A's avatar

But, everone knowed that thar Mooslim Obamer feller wanted to git the guns, and put all the white folk in prison in Wal-Mart basements(?). Particular in Texas. (Although, as a blogger recently noted, why would it be necessary to coerce Texans to enter a Wal-Mart – all you’d have to do is announce a half price sale on ammo and chicken nuggets, the get the hell outta the way to avoid getting trampled).

Man I surely miss that Muslim guy.
