How can I make an Super Nintendo style RPG of my own?

Asked by ScottyMcGeester (1897points) March 1st, 2013

I’ve always wanted to do this, but when I collaborated with some friends the ideas were just forgotten.

I bought RPG Maker II a looong time ago for the PS2, but it was confusing and I wished I were able to do it on my computer so I could insert my own music of choice and things like that. I assume to do something like that on the computer takes a lot of time and knowledge of scripts. I just want to look more into it though. I would like to ultimately make a ROM playable on an emulator. But what are the programs one uses to make a game like that anyway?

The newer versions on RPG Maker are better; the PS2 version was a bad, dumbed-down port.

I still like RPG Maker as I feel it is the best program of that genre. Don’t let the PS2 version deter you.

There is also an easy to use drag-and-drop programming application called Game Maker. There is a free basic version and the more advanced version is cheap, only like $20 or something.

RPG maker software for PC is made literally to do what you want to do. It even has built in royalty free sprites in it!

Learn ‘Ruby’ programming language to get the most out of it.
