Why is my period getting shorter?

Asked by mambo (2754points) March 5th, 2013

I’m 21 years old and I am having a problem with my period lately. For the past two months, my periods have been getting shorter. I am not on any birth control at all. I have also lost about 20 pounds within this time period and have been exercising a little more.

With that said, my periods shortened from 7 days to 5 days. I know this is something I shouldn’t be complaining about, but I just think it is strange.

You’ve passed puberty and your periods are becoming more average in length, would be my guess. Mine did the same thing at that age and they stayed at about 5 days until I entered perimenopause and now they are about 3 to 4.

Sometimes elete athletes don’t have periods at all. I’m sure it has to do with your exercise and weight loss but unless they completely stop it is probably nothing to worry about.

Judi was right. If you’re body fat gets low enough your periods will stop or be less. What’s your BMI if you’re willing to disclose that?

I don’t really know my BMI, but over the past four months I have went from 235 pounds to 198 pounds. I am 5’8”.

@mambo It’t not the weight loss then. It may just be your periods are evening out as you mature.

Did you switch from using tampons to pads?

mambo's avatar

Nope. I have been using tampons for a pretty long time.

Then I guess it is some sort of hormonal shift. Have you always been regular? Are your cycles shorter too? Is the period heavier?

My period did not shorten until my 40’s. Many people above are saying it’s normal, I don’t know how many 20 year olds go through that, maybe many do. My period was seven days starting sometime in the first year my period started, thru to, as I said, my early 40’s. Seven days on the pill, seven days off the pill.

Using tampons would mean you are very aware of the legnth of your period.

Maybe mention it to your doctor next time you go in for a check up. She could run a hormone test. Although the most accurate test would ne day 3 and most GYN’s don’t do that test, reproductive endocrinologists do.

Maybe at your next check up tell your doctor.

If your feeling ok ~ and generally in good health ~ I would see a gynochologist ~ to ease your concern but in sure he will say ~ your fine!! I get mine 3 days tops – when I was 14 til about 17 I ha it for a week or so ~ then one month it skipped them I got it again and it was for 3 days ~ I’m 43 and have 4 grown kids and it was never a medical problem!! The shorter you have it would be a blessing to most people ;0)
