I'm trying to find a word, but I'm having a brainfart at the moment?

Asked by rockfan (14632points) March 8th, 2013 from iPhone

I’m looking for a word that describes the element of writing in movies that deals with two characters talking, but there are undertones and levels of what can be interpreted. Basically it’s the opposite of being straightforward. Any help?

Not sure if there’s one word that encompasses all that.

Subtext?

Talking at cross purposes?

undertones?
