Techie Question about VPN's?

Asked by serenityNOW (3643points) March 9th, 2013

Just a quick-ish question: is a VPN setup on my laptop safe enough to torrent (No lectures please) music and the like on my computer, without all this malarky about port-forwarding, PnP whatever the hell that is? I can’t fiddle with my family’s router, so I’m out of luck if I have to tweak the network settings in my house. Thanks!

VPNs don’t really work the way you seem to be thinking, just download utorrent and torrent away, you dont need to port forward or anything. With vpns you will.

well, i’d use this vpn I use it on my laptop, its free, and it keeps you anonymous. It does all the work for you and doesn’t screw around with your router.

The quick answer, without any malarkey, is YES.

Download the VPN client and connect away. It will work as you expect. The router is not affected in any way.

Try this. Go H.A.M. and stick it to the man and just torrent. Just look for the little neon aliens, and pay attention to the comments. Don’t seed because that’s how you get in trouble.
