How to repel/prevent spiders in your room?

Asked by Isssyyy (66points) March 9th, 2013 from iPhone

I am deathly afraid of spiders, today i literally found two in my bed and started screaming I had to call my neighbour to remove them. I have googled how to repel them and it came up with like a billion solutions like using lemons, lavender oil, peppermint oil etc to get rid of them. I have even tried putting conkers in my room but one spider thought it would be hilarious to put its web over the conker!!!! If anyone could help I would seriously apreciate it !!! :) (eurgh I feel all itchy now thinking about spiders)

I think the best thing to do is call in a fumigator. If you cant afford that at present, try a room fogger. Where u let it off and go out for the day. If you are findng so many at once, possibly you have an infestation.

To calm you while you wait to get the fogger or call the fumigator. Perhaps strip the room and use a spray for direct contact. Keep the air well ventilated.

I simply show them who’s boss and throw them out the back door as soon as they are discovered.

Spiders go where the food is. Get rid of the other bugs first, then the spiders will leave.

Glue traps also work for catching pesky spiders. Or you could do a bug bomb, which you can find at any home improvement store.

Cats eat spiders, at least the ones dumb enough to get anywhere the cat can get. There is a reason every spider I see in my house is near/on the ceiling.

Problem is, if you get rid of the spiders, you might start to have issues with other insects. How do you feel about other sorts of bugs? Or turning your house into a chemical wasteland where animals and small children may sicken/die from touching something that was in your place when you bombed it; something like the wall or the floor?

I think that @RealEyesRealizeRealLies has the best idea; make it so that the spiders have no desire to be there. If you still prefer the chemical solution, I recommend a few gallons of gasoline and a lighter; more effective, longer lasting, and less toxic.

@flutherother My wife nominated me for spider relocation duties. Those that don’t get eaten by the cats wind up in the bushes out front. Seems easier than cleaning where you squished them and then dealing with the things they are no longer eating.

Maybe you should get some therapy for your arachnophobia. lol
Sorry, I have a hard tome relating from she who finds every creature fascinating.
You can use a dust mop to swipe them up and then shake them out, outside.
Spiders are our friends, and they eat mosquitos and many other pests.

I wouldn’t break out the big poison guns at all, talk about overkill for a few spiders here and there. :-/

pour glue on them and watch them die horribly.
Revell Contacta is quite effective against large mosquitos and spiders alike.

A lot of Polish people I know are pretty superstitious when it comes to spiders. Let’s just say we try to stay out of their way, and they don’t make bad sh*t happen to us in retaliation.

Just my 3 cents, I understand an intense fear is nothing you can just “get over” overnight, however over the years I went from slight arachnophobic to “yo, sup’ spiders on my wall, how’s it hangin’ up there?” – at one point I just learned to appreciate them for the parasite-killers that they are, and generally we stay out of each others’ business. Spiders get a warm, safe hideout, and my flat is bug free ;-) Win win.

Spiders are not going to harm you. The reason that you find so many different “creative” ways to deter spiders on the internet is that none of them will work effectively. The only option that will allow you to retain your sanity is to learn to accept the spiders for the cool little dudes that they are, and let them go about their business as you go about yours.

You can spray the baseboards around the house with a bug spray once every few months. The fumigator thingies that fog the room work well, just remember nitto set one off if you have an gas pilot lights or flames going; be really careful if you have gas flowing into your house.

Very few spiders are harmful and most just sit in corners waiting to catch a bug.

What is a ‘conker’?

It’s almost impossible to guarantee a bug/spider free environment. Since that’s the case, I’d work on overcoming your phobia. You’re going to be dealing with one sort of icky thing or another for the rest of your life, so if you can beat the fear, you’ll be much better off.
