Asked by Lost_World (1231points) June 12th, 2008

I would like to fax files from my computer to a faxer and have ppl use a faxer to send files to my mac.

Is there any software that can do this?
If so how much is it? I would like it to be free or as cheep as possible.

OS X includes built-in faxing – check System Prefs—> Print & Fax.

In my understanding, you cannot just set your prefs to ‘fax’ without a modem. The newest Mac Intel machines do NOT have an internal modem, therefore you’d need to purchase an external modem before you’re going to do any faxing. The other way is to find some kind of service on the internet that will allow you to send and receive faxes, and that is likely to be free. (other than your cost of connection).

However, I will add a question to my answer: I came here looking for software that I heard can be installed on a Mac and allow you to fax using your internet connection without having to use some kind of ‘on-line’ service. Anyone ever hear of such a thing?

I had to send a fax the other day, I sent it from faxzero.com. you don’t need a phone line, you just upload a pdf. the free version had a 3 page limit and they add a watermark to the cover sheet, but besides that, it was great.

Mac, Linux, Windows, Unix any OS can be used for sending fax as long as you have an online faxing service account, an email account and an online connection.
