Why do thongs have tags sewn on?

It bothers me. Mine have these awful long tags sewn at the back of the undergarment, and they’re really uncomfy. Why would anyone attach tags to such tiny underwear (instead on printing the brand/washing instructions on a removable paper label)?
I’d like to cut them off, but there’ll be that annoying itchy bit of tag I can’t remove. ):

GQ. That doesn’t make any sense. If it’s that small the tag is going to be even more annoying.
Great question, and welcome to Fluther.
I have no idea why they have to do that! I’ve recently started buying boxer briefs with the tag information painted on the inside…It makes a lot more sense.
Just turn the thong inside out.
You know, I was just thinking this the other day. I have no idea why the have to do that, but I really hate it. However, I usually just rip the tag of then burn off the itchy part with a lighter.

I have tags that are as long as the thong itself!...but I cut it off just enough so that it doesn’t itch.
I’m so old, I thought you meant footwear.
You can use a single side razor blade or e-aco knife to cut it very close to the stitching.
I don’t know. Especially these days, when printing directly on the item of clothing is becoming more common. Honestly, I think all clothes should be tag-free. They are so often irritating!
It’s the law in the US that any textile product except hats, scarves, ties and a few other items which would be made unattractive with a label must have the care label “attached permanently and securely and be legible during the useful life of the product.” This is the law made by the FTC put into effect in 1971. It sure does seem to me that thongs should be in this exempt category but apparently they’re not. It would be great if they didn’t have to be permanently attached because then makers could just use the same type of label they use on scarves which is like an adhesive backed satin ribbon printed that can just be peeled off after purchasing. I mean, c’mon, most women know how to wash their undies without instructions from Uncle Sam.
Printing is another option but I don’t think on most laces and sheer fabrics used for thongs it would be legible or long lasting. Besides that you might see it bleed through from the face of the fabric. It is also way more labor intensive to have to individually print every panty. I know they do it on facings and other garments but I don’t think it would be practical to do it on thongs.
@mambo Clever idea to use a lighter but aren’t you afraid of damaging the thong by getting too close?
@Earthgirl Nope. It just singes the tag and I’m pretty quick with it.
@mambo Cool. I have to try that. :)
