Why do thongs have tags sewn on?

It bothers me. Mine have these awful long tags sewn at the back of the undergarment, and they’re really uncomfy. Why would anyone attach tags to such tiny underwear (instead on printing the brand/washing instructions on a removable paper label)?
I’d like to cut them off, but there’ll be that annoying itchy bit of tag I can’t remove. ):
