What are ways to get instagram followers?

Instagram isn’t a popularity contest, it’s a social site based on square images. Having a high number of followers means nothing if you have no clue who they are and do not interact with them.

Start by finding people you know on there, and post really good or interesting photographs. Browse through hashtags that are topics you find interesting and interact with and follow people you find there. Usually, they’ll look at your content to see if they’re interested in following you, as well – so again I remind you that it’s all about the photos.

If someone starts to follow me and I look at their profile and see no pictures I block them and might report them if their profile statement includes links; if they’re just reposting internet memes or taking attention-whore self portraits, I will not follow that person, and I might consider blocking them.

Take great images of interesting things. I don’t have any photos of myself or my friends on my account, but I like to share images of art, nature, architecture etc. Mostly I post things from my old life in NYC and my travels in Europe and Ecuador. People seem to like it and I have collected a few strangers but mostly people I know follow me.

1. You’ll need to have a decent amount of good pictures already
2. Use popular hashtags
3. Join the chain of f4f, though I don’t think you’ll get any real loyal followers this way seeing that they’re in it solely for a number just like you.
4. Have a theme for your instagram that people do loyally follow (i.e. food, nail art, fashion, landscape photography)

A lot of people don’t know about this, kind of a little corner of the web that we social marketers enjoy as ‘our little secret’.

@gambitking – I just saw your answer and signed up for “Empire.” Figured it’s worth a shot; I’m trying to garner enough influence so that when I finally relaunch my Design site, I’ll have some followers, likers, legions, etc. It looks neat, but like you said to @phoebewilsons it seems to have a bit of a learning curve.
