Has the word "word" gone out of current slang? I never hear it any more.

Asked by elbanditoroso (33550points) March 14th, 2013

Six months ago, I would often hear the word “word” said, when someone was really meaning “I agree” or “ditto” or “I’m with you!”.

But I was just thinking that I hadn’t heard “word” in months and months.

Is it one of those quickie expressions that is faddish for a little while and then disappears?

Or am I just not getting the word?

I have never heard this use of the word “word” except on TV. Maybe it just never caught on in the UK, or maybe it’s a generational thing. Perhaps the people who used it have grown up and realised how silly it sounds.

I know a lot of people who used to say it, then they switched to saying “swag” when they approved of something. It makes me cringe so hard.

I saw someone type this very recently and had no idea what they meant. Thanks for the question that explains it.

I’ve only heard it used ironically. So, probably over, yeah.

That saying is well over ten years old as I remember it being used in the 1990s, so no – it’s not a quickie trend.

Not too long ago I overheard a man talking in his cell phone say, “Word is bond,” which is another phrase from that time.

I have a friend at work who uses it frequently! She’s an East Londoner.
