When you ask 'Does my bum look big in this?'?

Asked by Shippy (10020points) March 14th, 2013

Do you want the truth? So, for example you ask a friend, or a lover, or a parent this. Do you want them to say yes it does actually? Or, would you prefer that they say, well those trousers are not helping matters. Or something a little softer? If it is a lover, how would you feel if they said, indeed it does?

What if you asked a lover, do I look old, and they agreed. How would you feel?

I think for me, I would prefer the truth, but a little sugar coated. How about you? (I used the bum thing as it is common, I personally wish I had a big butt, they are so sexy!) Men too, how do you feel if you are told by a lover you look like shite!

You want the truth. No IFs, ANDS, or BUTTs…..

I try not to ask.

When I ask that question, it’s usually to make sure that my butt does look big in it. I’m a curvy girl, so I like it that way! I want honesty, that’s all.

I think a lot of people are fishing for compliments when they ask this question. I did ask my partner once and he said ‘yes’, that was when my bum was actually not big!! I freaked out and wouldn’t go out! Haha.

But now I’m older and wiser and accept the feed back for what it is hopefully the truth.

Where the hell did my favorite ass go? @Shippy? You can’t just ask me questions and leave me hanging like this! @Shippy come back to me! I scream from somewhere far off in the distance and in the faint echoes you can just barely hear me cry out… Does does my my ass ass look look big big in in this? this?

In my experience, I have never known any woman who actually asked that question, similar to that apocryphal “Do those jeans make me look fat?”

Looking in the mirror is its own answer. I do not ever (ever) need a second opinion as long as my eyes are open.

When I ask that question, I do actually want the truth. It took my husband a while to figure out that I really wasn’t trying to trick him. I usually just say, “What do you think about this one?” if I’m trying stuff on for him. He’s learned that I want an honest answer, without sugar coating.

I think it is fishing for compliments. Because really, who has the guts to tell someone their ass looks immense in any style or fashion?

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@rooeytoo Maybe for some… I only ask my mother, my husband, or my best friends for their opinions on something. I don’t want compliments, though, I want to know if they see something I didn’t. They’re all comfortable telling me a particular piece isn’t flattering, makes me look like a ho, makes me look fat, etc…

the question my sis usually gets asked is “does this make my legs look short?”
I have stumpy legs. )’:

I’m looking for the truth or at least a real answer. My mom, sister or daughter will tell me the truth, but 5 minutes in, my husband will say everything looks great to get me out of the store dressing room or he will say that it looks great if it makes me look slutty. So I’ve given up asking him. LOL
I don’t mind if my ass ever looks big. But I do ask how does this make me look. Now, if I throw on something that flattens by rear, than somebody better tell me the truth!

I feel comfortable in my own skin and so I’ve never felt the need to ask that question (or any of its many variations). Although it may not be the case for everyone as some people may be genuinely looking for honest feedback, I think in most cases people are usually fishing for compliments when they ask “does this make me look fat?” (as someone else has already pointed out).

This question made me think of this. Rather mean, but still funny.

I don’t think I’ve ever asked this question. I’ll ask, “What do you think about this outfit?” or something, usually of my daughters, and I genuinely want their honest opinion. But never “Does this make me look fat/my ass look big”.

I’m thinking of opening a boutique called…BIG BONES. The dress labels will be ‘Does my bum look big in this?’, ‘Big Bones’ and ‘I used to be a size six but what the heck!’ for Plus size gals with attitude! Hahaha

“It’s not the clothes, it’s your fat ass”.

Gabby101's avatar

@augustlan, I’m with you. I think this question is from some joke from the 50’s and not asked often in real life, especially now, with men’s taste changing and the appreciation for a nice, rounded booty.

If I’m at the store with someone or at home, but the clothes still have the tags on, I will be honest with them if something doesn’t flatter them. If we’re at the point of no turning back, I will typically tell a white lie (unless there is something terrible happening that would cause them embarrassment). I only ask if I really want to know, otherwise, what’s the point?
