The Pope is Muslim? Who is next?

Pope Francis chose his name to honor another Pope with close ties to Muslims.
So, first we have a muslim president, now we have a muslim Pope.
Who’s next?

@filmfann, have any conservatives raised this as a complaint, or are you just being flippant for the fun of it?
I read the article, and apparently scholars are undecided as to whether Francis of Assisi wanted to “reach out” to Muslims or convert them. His earlier biographers portrayed him as a zealot seeking conversions, whereas later biographers have cast him as a “bridge-builder.” These portrayals certainly have much to do with the time in which they were written.
He did come along on the Crusade, after all. But if the Christians’ consensus was that he faced certain death if he went to the Muslim camp, then that does sound pretty courageous that he went to reach out to Malik al-Kamil, whatever his motivations.
The ugly rays or prejudice are flowing out of @filmfann today. You’re painting with an awfully broad brush, and making some rather huge and sensationalistic assumptions in what you wrote.
First off, Muslims aren’t inherently scary or worthy of derision. Some are, sure, just like some Baptists, and some Jews, and some of any religion you choose. So talking to or honoring Muslims is not inherently suspect.
Secondly, I give this new pope credit for not being trapped behind cloistered towers and talking only to Catholics. This new guy knows that the world is made of different people and different religions, and he seems to accept that one can learn from the good (and the bad) in other religions.
Finally, I thnk that your comment (Is the pope a muslim?) is trying to create guilt by association, which seems a rather shaky tactic.
The multiple layers of sarcasm in this thread is too much for me to comprehend what is going on.
@filmfann Are you just asking this to get a good discussion going? Who cares if he has strong ties to the Muslims? Aren’t we all peeps?
I don’t see any controversial layers in this question.
Can it be a case of “it’s in the eye of the beholder”?
Or, some people are influenced by the years long indoctrination of several media that portrayed (all) muslims as (potential) suicide bombers/terrorists?
But then again, maybe I read it wrong.
Who’s next?
Donald Trump?
Knowing @filmfann , I am sure this question is asked facetiously, but I can see how it could be open to misinterpretation.
I heard the Pope and Obama are working on turning the White House into a Mosque.
Firstly, Saint Francis wasn’t a Pope. Secondly, Saint Francis tried to convert the Muslims; not become one. Sadly, you are mistaken. Our president was a Muslim until Reverend Wright converted him to “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian.”
@Adirondackwannabe, I wish I had thought of that. Great Answer.
Wait! Wait! The pope is a terrorist and Trump is a muslim? Or am I just reading too much into this?
There are major conversions going on in the Muslim world, a lot are underground right now because of retaliation of Muslim leaders. It’s a pretty well-known fact.
If the new Pope is reaching out, I’m sure it’s with love and the hope of conversion or peace.
@rojo No, we want to Trump the Muslims. Is the deal.
According to world renown expert on everything, Newt Gingrich, the US Supreme Court’s under attack and at risk of switching to Sharia due to the appointment of that well known Sharia sympathizer, Justice Elana Kagan.
Herman Cain’s sounded the alarm bells as well. “Call me crazy,” he says… OK Herme, “You’re bat-shit crazy.” The USA is about as likely to institute Sharia as the law of this land as Pee Wee Herman is likely to get elected President. Wait, less likely. Paul Rubens is still alive and is a pretty smart guy with some connection to the fact based universe.
And besides, we have Michelle Bachmann to protect us. So there, Muslim caliphate.
My head is spinning! I don’t know what to believe! Will someone please tell me. If three people tell me the same thing, I’ll know it’s true and will think that way.
Okay fine, I’ll admit to Closet Muslimism. That doesn’t mean I’m a Muslim or anything. I just keep a few chained in my closet…

Blueberries are a good source of fiber and vitamin c, and are very tasty.
The next thing will be a Muslim jelly.
@flutherother They’d be welcome, I have lots of questions, myths to dispel.
I actually find it kind of weird that I haven’t encountered any openly Muslim jellies here. Has there every been someone discussing religion or politics here from that perspective?
Well, we can clarify everything by understanding, as @bkcunningham said yesterday, that “Obama and Netanyahu are now BFFs.”
So now we have a Muslim head of Israel.
@zenvelo Hmm… maybe it’s not just Fluther that has an alternate universe…
@tom_g Now if two more people agree with you, I will believe that about blueberries. As it is, I only eat them because they are blue and look pretty with strawberries and milk on my cereal.
Wait, we can keep them in a closet now?
What is this? The Walking Dead Muslim?
Maybe this should be on a different question, but how would a Muslim Zombie be different, exactly?
They’d eat their daughters after the “honor killing”... I know, I know, so tacky!
Oh my Christ America. How bad have the country’s math skills become when brown=muslim?
@Blondesjon The new Pope isn’t even brown. He is from Argentina, but both parents are Italian.
@filmfann . . . ‘Round these parts it evidently don’t take too terrible much of that there melatonin shit to set your threat level at “brown”.
