Yep, pretty much, unless they’re more like this
I have no idea what describing something as “ghetto” means, so if it were me, I would ignore the critic.
If you like the earrings, who cares what she thinks? And did you ask for her opinion? Giving unwanted advice is also very “ghetto,” or if not, at least very rude.

Personally, I think it’s more Mafia Princess looking, the big hoops, not necessarily ghetto. I don’t think they’re really work earrings though, more glam than work-appropriate, so I can see the point.
I have one pair that I wear on occasion and they’re nice silver big hoops, but they drive me crazy tangling in my hair.
With those huge ones, it looks like they lost their pet canary.
The size alone makes them somewhat suspect although I would not use the term “ghetto”.
I like the big hoops. I think they’re sexy, in a porn star kind of way. It takes some confidence to pull them off right. I don’t think they’re ghetto at all.
They show independence and style and a strong sense of self.
Anyone who uses a term like “ghetto” should not be listened to, that’s just pushing out a racist statement. And I don’t care who is saying it, its’ wrong to say. Lots of fashionable women wear hoop earrings.
This is probably silly but I was always scared to wear them for fear I would get them caught on something or a dog would hook a paw in them and rip my earlobe. But I don’t get the ghetto business, I think the thin silver ones look very classy.
No. Large hoop earrings tend to psychologically say “look at me”.
Ghetto? Stereotyping by earring choice seems fairly weak minded, IMO.
I have earrings like the first pair you posted, @cutiepi92. I always think of them as being hippy style. Is ghetto style the same as gangsta’ or thug style? I read that it means lower income urbanites living above your means and using welfare and other state assistance to supplement your Louis Vuitton and Gucci lifestyle. Is that what you meant? How can you tell that from a pair of earrings?
It depends. If they’re simple hoops, some people can pull them off – depends on the hairstyle and dress. I don’t like the look in the first photo. If they’re more “busy”, like the second pair… dislike.
I don’t know what ‘ghetto’ means either in terms of denoting a style. If you like them and feel good in them, wear them. Who cares what some rude woman at work thinks. Unless she’s your boss and pays your wages, ignore her.
I don’t think they look ghetto.
However, I wouldn’t wear them during a lightning storm; a stray bolt might permanently fuse them to your earlobes. ;-o
Bigger the hoop, bigger the ho.
I don’t necessarily think they are “ghetto” but I’m not a fan of the look of big hoops. Small hoops are okay, like in the picture @syz posted or a little bit bigger, but too much bigger and they just look kind of tacky, in my opinion.
I like them.
I’ve heard people refer to them as ho’ing hoops (a place to put your ankles), etc. I think it’s all stupid, no, I know it’s stupid. If you like them, wear them. I still like big hoops.
I don’t like the big hoops, but I wouldn’t call them “ghetto”. Not professional, but okay for a night out, I guess. Little hoops are fine.
I guess it’s just weird for me because I haven’t worn hoops as small as @syz posted since I was a little girl. Those are sooo tiny lol. Only time I ever wear earrings that small (studs and the like) is in the workplace. My earring collection consists of stuff like this this this and this . I guess I just never assumed that other people looked at my earrings differently than I do and could possibly make assumptions based off of them. I have other earrings and I’ll still wear my hoops, but maybe less often. @bkcunningham I guess when I say “ghetto”, I am not referring to a textbook definition but just the overall ghetto culture associated with low income neighborhoods, rap music, etc.
I wear hoops like your first pic, and I always think Gypsy. Which to me means mysterious. Just goes to show how much culture has been lost over the centuries. Anything labeled as Gypsy, Bohemian, Hippie, Ghetto, Prep, Hipster, Goth, Steampunk, Lolita, etc. is dismissed by certain points of view as representative of less than savory dressing and behaviors.
Wear what you like, Own it.
I have always associated big hooped earings with the romantic image of Romany gypsies/travellers however, in the UK it seems that this look has also been associated with the Chav generation which I assume is similar to “ghetto”.
