Is it a waste of time to wait for 1080p video to buffer if your laptop has a1366x738 resolution?

Asked by Sarah90 (373points) March 26th, 2013

We have an argument at my place of work.
I say it is useless to watch a video in 1080p instead of 720p if your computer has a 1366×738 resolution. Several people have told me regardless whether a screen can display the higher resolution, it is best to download and watch the 1080p video as it will be better quality.
Who is right ?

Either your monitor or your video player will be down-rez’ing the 1080p version to fit your screen if you use the 1080p version. Why not let the pros do the down-rez and use their 720p version instead? – and save bandwidth in the bargain. So, I agree with you @Sarah90.

Now if you are all keeping your downloads for possible later viewing, then get the 1080p version because someday you’ll get a higher rez screen. That would be a worthwhile reason to get the big one.
