A rose is not a rose is not a rose. You should prune the deadwood in spring if you live in a 4 season-area. You can prune scraggle or runaways any time, but if there are buds, you will lose the bloom. Many, many different kinds of roses...once-blooming, ever-blooming, several blooms, etc. Google the species you have.. I have gargantuan rugosas that keep growing into wood siding and wooden decks. So I just hack away during growing season, and still have zillions of blooms. W. a temperamental...like a hybrid-tea, I would check w. a pro. or local garden center.
