What is wrong with this sentence?

“Jody Mangue wrote that her son, Evan Ebel, adored animals and walked up to the mentally ill in restaurants to engage them in conversation.”

Are we looking for a grammatical error, hence the tag? Other than the implication that the mentally ill are animals, I see no errors in sentence structure.

@Dutchess_III I didn’t giggle :( I always take stuff too seriously…

It doesn’t seem so ambiguous to me because she is dealing with two ideas in two different clauses joined by the conjunction and. Each clause deals with a different idea but both clauses intend to illustrate the fact that he was a compassionate individual. Also, animals are not usually labelled as mentally ill, they don’t go to restaurants, and they don’t engage in conversations.

I just draw pictures in my head as I read, I guess…and that sentence caused me to…see something strange, so I erased and and started over.
