What would be a reasonable adjustment period for new glasses?

Asked by RandomGirl (3362points) March 27th, 2013 from iPhone

I got new specs yesterday. I was kind of surprised, though, when it was such an adjustment. When I first got glasses three months ago, it took me all of a few hours to get used to them. This time, though, I still feel like my head is an extra foot off the ground and the floor is all ripply. I’m still having occasional headaches, too. It just doesn’t seem right. So my question is: How long can I expect this adjustment period to last? Could it be that I somehow got wrong lenses? When should I call the ophthalmologist about it?

@RandomGirl I’ve never had that reaction. Call ASAP tomorrow. You didn’t get bifocals for the first time did you?

I have worn glasses since the fourth grade and felt comfortable the minute I put on my new glasses, usually once a year.

The one time I didn’t, I had been given an incorrect script. I couldn’t wear the glasses for five minutes.

Call your doctor immediately and tell him you need to come in to have the prescription rechecked.

@adirondackwannabe: Nope, not bifocals.
@gailcalled: Oh, goody…

@RandomGirl Yup, definately call first thing. Do you keep the old glasses?

RandomGirl's avatar

@gailcalled Nope. I only got new lenses, and kept the old frames. I didn’t see why I should keep just the lenses. :/

@RandomGirl My distance vision isn’t good, so as my glasses get stronger it makes it tougher to see up closer. So my eye guy said keep the old glasses for use on close up stuff. It works.

@RandomGirl The lenses are the issue, not the frames.
Why did you get new glasses after only 3 months?

Bellatrix's avatar

Didn’t you have a problem with your old glasses too? Are these your replacement specs? I know you were thinking of asking for bifocals.

@chyna: Of course the lenses are the issue. I didn’t want new frames, though, you see, so they just swapped the lenses. They asked if I wanted to take the old lenses home with me, but I didn’t see what good they would do me.
@Bellatrix: Yep. My vision got bad originally in October or November. Finally got my first pair of glasses in late November. They worked perfectly until about February, when I started getting headaches and vision problems again. Got my eyes rechecked, and it turns out my left eye (which was perfect three months ago) is now worse than my right. It turns out that bifocals aren’t what I need, because the main problem is astigmatism (which affects your vision no matter what distance you’re focusing at). The nearsightedness isn’t really an issue, he said. If that was my only problem, I’d hardly need glasses. So I got the new specs on Tuesday, and they’re messing with my head. I guess we’re headed back tomorrow. I’m getting tired of that place…

@RandomGirl I have astigmatism and the first pair of glasses I ever got were the wrong script. I had the same problem you are talking about. But, I have noticed that with astigmatism sometimes your vision will vary.

Like sometimes it seems like my glasses are not good enough, like I can’t see out of them well. I was told it has something to do with the water retention or fluid and the eye or something but I dont really remember.

And then there are other times where it seems I can see without my glasses not too badly, it seems to vary.

You also might want to know that astigmatism has symptoms like blurry vision, headaches and fatigue are symptoms that I have experienced even with proper the proper lens.

I do think though that you your script may be off a little.

I just got new eyeglasses today too!
Since I have not worn my old glasses daily, I too have slight headache. This is normal, however if the headaches too much to bear, then gradually wear them for a few hours per day until your eyes can accommodate them better.

It should not have lasted as long as it has so far. You should call the eye doc, it sounds like your prescription is off.

Headaches and inability to focus are no-nos upon receipt of new prescription. Waiting is not an option, something is wrong with the prescription or your eyes if the prescription doesn’t work immediately.

Did your eye doctor suggest to you that it is normal to change prescriptions after only three months? Did you suggest to your eye doctor that you ‘suddenly’ needed glasses the first time you got them or did you report years of diminishing eyesight? Have you researched the causes of vision loss?

I ask the above because, as an adult, any vision changes that occur in a quick fashion should be vigorously analyzed in case the vision loss is indicative of some other condition. I first got specs when I was 12. I got new specs every year until I was 18, from then on it spaced out to 2 years, 3, then 4, then I got to my 40’s and age degeneration started. The eye doctors explained my vision loss as due to rapid growth spurts and weight gain. Now they say it’s due to aging. I’ve had 5 or 6 eye doctors over the years, at least their training has been consistent.

@DaphneT The doc was mildly surprised that my vision changed all at once (both times). He said it might be growth spurts, but the last time I grew at all was when I was 12 (I’m 16 now). I don’t think I’ll be having a growth spurt any time soon. We’re headed in to get the glasses checked out first thing this morning. If they’re what the doctor called for, it’s off to the MD. (Or whatever the eye doctor tells us to do.) Oh, goody.

I have had astigmatism since the fourth grade also and have only once had a problem with new glasses, due to sloppiness on the Dr.‘s part. I immediately switched to another Doc. in the practice.

(I am talking decades.)

RandomGirl's avatar

@gailcalled: Well, now I know I do, in fact, have the right script. Several people have checked it and rechecked it.

The problem is in my eyes/head.

Now we just have to figure out where to go from here.

This is really frustrating and confusing.

@RandomGirl, I hope it turns out to be something simple. My prayers are with you, for whatever strength you need.
