What do you like about your school /college /work?
I like my college because it feels as if I’m actually learning something for a change, and my program is something very versatile that can be applied to virtually any industry. I like my job because of my co-workers, mainly. I probably would have quit if it wasn’t for them.
How about you ?
Thank you very much.

It’s a wonderful thing to enjoy the place where you work.
I am very lucky that I enjoy mine as well. My department is very collegial, which is unusual for a PhD program. Ever since my first year, more advanced students have been very helpful and welcoming, and I keep trying to pay it forward with the students who came in after me. Also, my adviser/boss/mentor is WONDERFUL, and everyone loves him. I am so lucky to be working with him.
I like the range of projects that I work on. I like working with a team (different teams).
I like working at the core of an industry that has a high visibility and gets reported on the nightly news a lot. It is still as fun and exciting as it was when I started over 30 years ago.
I like school because it’ll lead to a degree. I like my job because it’ll lead to money in my bank account.
So, I’m a pessimist, what of it? :) Being happy in my career will come after I graduate – which makes the hell I’m going through seem worth it. If I loved my job now, I wouldn’t need a degree.
I hate it. I feel its a huge waste of time and I’m just going through the motions to get the stupid piece of paper that says I know what I’ve already known.
That said, I LOVE to learn I just hate how education is handled in this country and especially how college feels like a money making institution anymore rather than an place of education.
I am a homemaker and I like being able to choose when I go to sleep, when I wake up, what tasks I do and when I do them.
I used to like the challenge of putting together a bid, buying out the job and coming in under budget and watching the building go from from a two dimensional paper image to a building that people wanted and used. Now, I am bored, burned out at work (and I am a parner in the co.) it’s time for a change.
@uberbatman: I am sorry to hear that this is your experience with college education. Not all schools are like that, though. I, too, hate how higher education has become a money making system. I hate the instrumentalization of knowledge. That learning is worthless unless it leads to a degree, which gives you access to a decent job. :-/
@bookish1 Yea I know not all schools are like this but I’ve had a pretty shit experience with schooling in general my whole life. I could theoretically look for a better college now but I’m already 2.5 years in so my attitude is more grin my teeth and bare it, get it over with and move on.
@uberbatman : Gotcha. Here’s hoping that if you do what you need to do, you will soon be able to do what you want to do !
I’m a stay at home parent and I like that I don’t have to stress about child care when there is an unexpected illness or snow day. I don’t miss out on special moments and I’m always available when my children need me.
When in school, I used to like the lined spiral notebooks.
