Am I losing weight too quickly?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) March 28th, 2013

I am a sedentary parapleghic trying to lose some weight. I started a week ahead of my diet on green coffee bean extract and then started a paleo diet this week. I have already lost 4 pounds. This is averaging my weight over the course of the day. Is there a threshold of weight where it is unhealthy to lose more than? I feel pretty good, and the only thing I basically gave up was grains. The wife unit is wailing and Gnashing teeth because she loves her breads. I’m not telling here how much I lost because she didn’t. I have to stay on this diet til she hits her goal so may be too slender by the time this is all over.

Four pounds is not unusual for the first week or so. It would be good if it settled down to a couple of pounds a week.

When you get ready to do maintenance you can increase some of your foods until you level out.

Guys tend to drop a lot of weight quickly in the early weeks of dieting. I think it’s mostly water. Women tend to lose weight more gradually. We are designed to weather out food shortages better than men so we have a harder time losing weight.

It depends a little on how much you have to loose. The less you have to lose the slower you lose it usually.

On average, isn’t a pound a week a good target?

1 point a week if you have less than 10 lbs to lose. But if you have 50+ it’s not unhealthy to loise 2–4 lbs a week and even more the first few weeks as you detox.

I agree with @Judi that it depends how much you need to lose. If it is over 30 pounds, switching to a much healthier diet and losing 4 pounds would not be unusual. 3 of the pounds is probably water. Not that water does not count, it does in my book. If you are eating much fewer calories, which also means much less sodium, your body needs to keep electrolytes in balance so you shed water. Add in fewer calories will also mean pulling from some fat stores most likely. See what happens over the next few weeks. If you feel lightheaded, weak, erratic heart beat, then I would consider your new diet as a possible cause and reevaluate your diet regimen.

The first 5 pounds really don’t count. When you begin a strict diet regimen, you shed fluids and are suddenly holding less matter in your digestive track (smaller portions consumed = less food to process). It’s not unusual to “lose” a few pounds immediately.

Please check in with us in a week or two from now. Good luck, and please know that I’m cheering for your success.

It is good to lose 4 pound weight in a week. If you go on proper way to lose weight then there is no side effect. Every must go on proper way.
Take proper diet daily, use fruits and green vegetables in your diet.
Drink plenty of water, use honey instead of sugar. avoid junk food etc

My moving average weight loss is now about 3 and a half pounds. Not bad considering I am not exercising. I am looking at what I can do about my abdominal region. That is where most of my fat is. Because I have very limited mobility in my legs I am unable to do conventional exercises such as crunches or sit-ups. I can tighten my abdomen up and hold it for reps, but am looking for something better. I can already to pull-ups and chin-ups chair and all! lol. (I did wipe out once when I was less than careful putting myself down.)

I like the sound of your weight loss! I have been trying to control my eating habits. I do better with adding a few daily yoga moves, than I do with trying to go on a diet.

I am missing my breads even more, but I have lost 11 pounds on average. I do like being able to eat meat and vegetables, but when the guy at the restaurant brings out a basket of warm rolls I salivate uncontrollably.

Are you still eating fruits? You still need to get some carbs. Those extreme diets with zero carbs aren’t good for you.

majorrich's avatar

oh yes, I’ve been eating more of those tiny little oranges. I snack on those a lot. I’m just avoiding wheat and gluten

JLeslie's avatar

Got it.

Do you notice a big change avoiding gluten?

I’ve been “dieting” also. Basically trying to be more vegan for cholesterol/health reasons, and within that doubling my vegetable and fruit intake. Although, I ate very little fruit previously, so doubling fruit is still not a lot. Trying to eat at least one piece of fruit a day; can be just one clementine (I think that is the orange you are talking about) sometimes. Or, one banana, one apple, etc. I’ve never tried to eliminate gluten.

the book mentions gluten as a substance that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. I figure if I’m swollen on the outside, maybe I’ll reduce swelling on the inside ;D So far I’m finding gluten in most processed grains, so goodbye pasta :( I’ve become a lot more regular so flushing out my innards is pretty good

Makes sense. Worth a try. I have friends who say they feel much better off of gluten. I could give up the bread (although I do love good bread) but I would miss some of my favorite cereals and pasta.

Plus, I am sure gluten is in many things I like that I don’t realize, so it would probably get annoying.
