Why do people let the news get away with such manipulative language.

Asked by poisonedantidote (21685points) March 31st, 2013

I was just watching Sky News, and I wonder how they keep getting away with using such sneaky language.

For example:

They said, “The queen was given flowers from well-wishers” meaning “The queen was given flowers from toddlers who don’t care who she is because they had been told to give them to her”

They talk about the UK bedroom tax, and mention “the tax critics” meaning “every single last person in the country”

This kind of language is used for more or less everything they talk about.

Why do people let them get away with it?

The problem is that most people are susceptible to this kind of manipulation. It works. And the few of us who don’t fall for it, being in the minority, have very little power to force them to stop. It’s a serious problem, and it’s affecting the way we choose our governments. I don’t know where it will end – probably in either fascism or revolt. Or both.

I was in Redding, which is Tea Party country, and there was a headline on the local rag that said something like “Congress Approves Weapon Seizure Funding”. I saw that and went “Whoa!”
Bought the paper, and read the story. Turns out they approved funding for taking guns away from felons. I couldn’t believe they had duped me into buying their paper.

Journalism is about words and words are about manipulation, both good and bad.

Because people want to be lied to, and because it’s so easy to do it is a win/ win for everyone.

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room Journalism is about words, but there are ever few real journalists involved in mass media today. Big business is about profits, not words or truth. They do what sells. Tabloid and yellow journalism sell better than in-depth reporting. Want to change that? We all have to be the change we want.

What the fuck you want us to do, storm the newsroom & demand a re-write?

Agreed, @ETpro. Having once worked for a major newspaper, I know a bit on this subject.

“I was just watching Sky News…” Don’t watch it. Sometimes people vote with their pocketbooks, sometimes with their tv remotes. I don’t watch Fox News, either. If all viewers did this then certain broadcasters would make significant changes, or disappear.
