Alternative vs Pop vs Rock Music?
How do you draw the line between Alt, Pop & Rock? I don’t always follow the logic used by iTunes.

Personally, I don’t think there is an “alternative” genre. So that makes classifying music an easy question – does it rock or doesn’t it?
its all one big mesh these days, rock is becoming a myth…....... : (
How can one dare to define a music genre when even the Recording Academy screws up as evidenced by the 1989 “Heavy Metal” Grammy being awarded to Jethro Tull over Metallica. During the acceptance speech for the 1992 award (Metallica’s first), drummer Lars Ulrich told the audience, “Thanks to Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year.”
I hate metallica…....
Their older songs were okay, but they just turned into greedy assholes, and I can’t support that ; (
@cheebdragon – what are some of your groups? The non-myth ones? no sarcasm meant. I like pretty much anything at some time or another.
Lately I have been listening to RHCP, Pantera, Korn (the older stuff), Queen (greatest hits), Sublime, Bad Religion (older stuff), Pennywise (older stuff)
and The Eagles (♥ Don Henley)
Thanks Cheebdragon I have not heard some of them. Now I can hear some new stuff. I have been playing the eagles, Don henley and queen (all their greatest hits) like mad lately.
Pop = You can pop, lock, and drop to it. Record companies need to shut it with ‘popular’.
Rock = You can rock out to it and have fun with it. You can be a rebel and all that jazz.
Alt = Strong lyrics and a different sound. Something original, but at the same time…not.
I guess that’s the simple way to put it. When I think of Pop, I think of like Britney Spears or something. When I think of Rock I think of Foo Fighters and Silverstein. When I think of Alternative, I think of The Smashing Pumpkins and The White Stripes.
@ MooKoo – that is the best explanation I have ever heard!!! Great job!
