There is an event (award ceremony) that I must attend tomorrow and all it says in the description is “cocktail dress”. No one is going to be wearing evening gowns or anything, but I have this dress and I was wondering if it would be good enough if I just added some really fancy jewelry. Please note, in real life it isn’t quite that short. Is this appropriate? I feel like my other dresses that technically count as “cocktail” dresses are a little bit too sexy/revealing for this event. This one is actually grandma approved lol

Yes. Large dangling earrings are the only jewelry you’ll need. But don’t take my word for it. Wait for some of our fashionistas to weigh in.

Yes. But, is it an award for work? Some sort of charity? It is awfully sexy for a work event. If the skirt actually hits you just above the knee then it would probably be ok even for work. My rule is sexy in only one place. Either mini skirt, or cleavage, or off the shoulder, but not two of those at once on the same dress.

I personally don’t think a sweater dress qualifies as a cocktail dress. But those above me disagree, so you will have to make your own decision. I have a nice Calvin sheath type dress, straight black bottom with off white princess type bodice and a matching short sleeved jacket. It is a semi shiny material and that is my standard dress up dress! I have had it quite a few years now but the design is classic and it always seems to be appropriate and stylish. Maybe you should invest in a standby dress such as that.

Thanks you guys. I ended up wearing it and when set off with the right jewelry, it actually looked really pretty. I got plenty of compliments and even all my family members (prudes as well lol) said it was beautiful :) I was worried for nothing lol

Good for you, glad it went well!

I’ll have to agree with @rooeytoo. It looks too casual for cocktails. It’s the material itself, not the style.
