What does "yoga asanas" mean?

Asked by Idear (86points) April 7th, 2013

As I become more involved with yoga, I keep seeing the term, “yoga asanas”. I would feel a little intimidated to ask my friends, as I think it is something that I should know. Can anyone tell me what it means?

It just means the poses themselves; body positions.

@thorninmud has it right.
No need to feel intimidated. Ask your teacher if you have questions. That’s what they’re there for!

‘cause why say “poses” when there’s a perfectly good Sanskrit word

Asana is a Sanskrit word that means ‘steady posture’.
It doesn’t mean just a pose, it’s a steady pose.
The focus involved to be steady is part of the practice.
