What do you do with a degree in Reading Education?

Asked by Aster (20028points) April 7th, 2013

A relative has this degree; I think it’s her Master’s degree. She lives far away and we never talk so I wondered if anybody else has heard of this degree and what it’s used for?

It’s often used for working in a resource room in a school to provide supplemental help to students who need to improve their reading skills.

I’ve never hear of it. But it sounds like a wonderful thing. Reading is one of the most important skills a student can have to advance in his studies at any and all levels. I teach three reading courses and reading and all the cognitive processes involved cannot be taught overnight, it is a long process that’s developed throughout the years.
I’d assume that such degree would concentrate in understanding all the processes involved in reading, strategies, and ways to help students develop such skill according to their level.

My son worked with a reading specialist when he was in first grade. She got him over the hump of decoding words, and he has been an avid reader ever since. That’s what a reading education specialist does.
