Suggestions for the best way to get water stains out of a silky furniture fabric?

Asked by figbash (7483points) June 13th, 2008

I’m trying to help a friend get large water stains out of the seat fabric of a vintage armchair. The fabric is silky in texture and somewhat delicate. Does anyone have any sure-fire tips for removing these that isn’t risky?

Caution I am not an expert in this field although I do sell cleaning chemicals for fabric soils. Let me say that water does not stain things. What happens when something gets wet is that the water brings out soil or treatment that is in the fabric thereby causing the stain. Many times the soil has been there for a very long time and has really become part of the fabric and is nearly impossible to get out. The best bet is to try to have it professionaly cleaned. If that fails I would recover the chair unless, of course, the vintage fabric adds tremendous value to the chair. I wish you good luck.
