Can someone be re-instated that has been banned on fluther?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29863points) April 8th, 2013

If someone gets too far out of line on fluther and gets banned, can they be re-instated?

A fellow jelly was banned and I miss him terribly. I never got to read what he supposedly was banned over and have never seen him post offensively (unlike a few jellies that are still here now.)

How does banning here work, and can it be reversed?

No, because usually it only happens after warnings and suspensions.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@marinelife Doesn’t that seem odd? Seems like a time limit of some kind would be applicable, since this is a social Q&A site.

I’ve read so many things here that are inappropriate, I’m just curious what would even get a person banned?

See the PM I sent you.

People can be banned for all sorts of reasons but it has to be considered to be quite serious to get banned. Mostly people will receive warnings before they are banned. Even with the more severe situations the member will also be given an opportunity to explain to the manager why the behaviour happened.

The community may not see or be aware of the behaviour that has led to the person being banned. The behaviour does have to breach the Fluther rules significantly though.

I am not suggesting any recently banned person has committed any of the following but these are things that could result in a member being banned. There are probably many more but it will give you a sense of behaviour that could lead to a ban.

Sending inappropriate (sexual content) posts to minors.
Stalking members and especially if the person has asked for contact to stop.
Deceiving the community. This might mean operating multiple accounts and presenting yourself as different people. I don’t mean an occasional ‘silly’ post, I mean a sustained and prolonged presentation of yourself as a different ‘character’ with the intent to deceive.
Lurve gaming but a ban would usually only happen after warning.
Trolling. Consistently and purposefully posting content that has the purpose of being offensive.
Spamming. Posting spam.

I’m sure there are other reasons. These are some that I can think of. For a ban to be lifted the person would have to approach the manager and persuade her that there was a reasonable excuse for the behaviour and that the problem has been resolved. It would be at her discretion whether a ban was lifted.

Not a Mod:

However, I’ve heard that PM’s can lead to warnings and being banned. Not just what the general Jellies can see on the questions.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Thanks everybody, I appreciate the valid reasons for banning. I don’t really connect with a ton of people so I really miss this person on a friendship level.

In most cases, no. Any behavior that leads to banning is, without fail, very serious. Additionally, except for spammers and obvious trolls, in almost all cases, the banned member has been warned that their behavior may lead to banning if it doesn’t stop. If the behavior continues (or happens again at a later date), that is a choice the member has made, fully aware of the possible outcome.

That said, we have reinstated at least one banned member in the time I’ve been managing the site. The banned member approached me after several years had gone by and explained that he had matured (he was rather young when we banned him) and gotten a mental illness treated during that time. We allowed him to come back, with the understanding that if he slipped into old habits he’d be banned without warning.

It has come to my attention that a recently banned individual has been lying to several people about the reason for the ban. This is not all that uncommon, unfortunately. Sometimes people say they quit, or make up some story to explain why their banning wasn’t their fault. It’s sort of understandable…I’m sure it’s embarrassing for people to admit what they’ve actually done that got them banned. But I encourage everyone to take such stories with a grain of salt.

I for one trust implicitly the judgement of the powers that be, if you’re banned then it’s for good reason, accept with good grace & move on…unless you happen to be a two time loser.

Please, for the love of God, no. The site has been far less psychotic and douchey lately. Sorry, but that’s my honest opinion.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate I must say, I haven’t noticed any decrease in general doucheyness on Fluther.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@livelaughlove21 Wow, I have! Of course, I’ve been lurking more than posting recently, with everything I’ve been dealing with, so maybe I’ve missed some of the doucheyness.

Thanks all, I guess I feel like some people here are friends and perhaps I don’t know them well, but that won’t stop me from caring about them as human beings. None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes, let’s hope we all learn from them. :)

@KNOWITALL I feel the same way. I was upset enough at the banning of one dear friend to leave entirely, but for the rest of you crazy bastards. Can’t justify losing everyone over losing one of you.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr Agreed. Even if we disagree on some subjects, a lot of these relationships are still founded on real emotions and caring. :)

<- Pissed that once again @AstroChuck beat me to the quip.

guess it’s time to start the pervy pm’s

Dammit, I want pervy PMs now!

Please excuse my ignorance but what does this mean

SpatzieLover's avatar

Lurve gaming means using an account to game (gain) lurve.

Bellatrix's avatar

@Arewethereyet as @SpatzieLover (and hello you! You don’t seem to have been about so much) said, it means someone starts a separate account and gives lurve to themself. Some people take the lurve system way too seriously!

Arewethereyet's avatar

Seriously? So how would you know that was happening? And can’t you only give a certain amount of points anyway? Sounds like a lot of work for little gain silly peeps

Bellatrix's avatar

There are ways to detect it and yes, 100 pts per account. Hardly seems worth it. I suppose if you set up multiple accounts it could make a little difference but its a bit like cheating on an exam. You know you did it so any joy from getting the lurve is lost.

augustlan's avatar

It is silly, but it happens more often than you’d imagine!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I created a silly account, just for a few giggles, and while I was having fun with it, I accidentally lurved one of my own answers and felt like a total schmuck. I don’t know how someone would feel comfortable doing it all the time!

ucme's avatar

As I think i’ve said before, creating an alternate account in order to game the system means you’re a sad, shallow, pathetic figure who deserves to be stared at whilst people point & laugh.

Paradox25's avatar

I really miss that jelly too regardless of what a few others may think. I’m not sure what he got banned for but I’ve never seen a jelly re-stated after getting banned and I’ve been involved with fluther for a few years now.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Paradox25 I miss him, too. I emailed him because we pretty much connected right off the bat, even if we vastly differ in a LOT of areas including politics and religion, and we’re fb friends. If you’re interested PM me and we’ll get connected elsewhere.

Rules are rules are rules, like my boss says ‘if you don’t like it, feel free to leave.’

JLeslie's avatar

Which jelly are we talking about? I must have missed who it is. I can’t find the name when I skim the Q.

JLeslie's avatar

Wunday was banned?! Very upsetting. I hope he is ok.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLeslie He is definately okay and on fb.

JLeslie's avatar

I see him on fb sometimes. Still, I worry.

There are several jellies I wish would come back. Some I don’t think they were banned, but they had some warnings. I miss them.
