Any Primary/Montessori school teachers here?

Asked by snapdragon24 (1597points) April 8th, 2013

Hey guys, I just wanted to get some feedback on anyone who has worked with children before and the steps you’ve taken to become a primary school teacher.

I’ve applied to some schools in the UK and find that it has become incredibly hard to get in. They are especially keen on future students doing well with Maths and Science (which I understand) but we are dealing with 3 to 6 year-olds here. I thought it would be a lot more interactive and less structural.

What are the key elements in becoming a good primary school teacher? Do we cover all topics – English, Science and Maths. Or are we assigned to teach the kids one of the three. I’ve become a bit confused of whats expected. Was hoping someone could assist me! Thanks in advance.

I’ve also looked at the Montessori Teacher training programs in the UK and it seems to be the complete opposite of PGCE, and if I may say it seems a lot more flexible and fun to do! What’s your experience? Do you have an AMI or IMC? How worldly recognized is it?

What is your degree in ? ?
I had several friends (cousins) that many years ago were trained in Montessori in England and came back to the USA a ran their own school. All three had B.A.‘s in education before they went to the UK.

Embarking on a career in Montessori education

Montessori offers exciting and richly rewarding career opportunities for anyone with a passion for teaching and children. To qualify as a Montessori teacher, you need to have a diploma in Early Childhood (ages 2½–6 years). The diploma can be studied by full, part-time or distance learning at Montessori Centre International, Europe’s largest Montessori teacher training college.
