How do you know when fresh pineapple is starting to spoil?
I bought a container of fresh pineapple last week. The sell date on the container said: sell by April 4th. I just had some now. It tasted a bit bitter. Was it bad? And how I am going to feel in the next hour or so?

The taste is the clue. Often, it will actually start to ferment and feel buzzy. If it is nice piercingly sweet and essentially free of brown spots, next time hack it up and throw on the compost.
Not a clue about what your GI tract will think. Let us know.
Pineapple is acidic enough that the spoilage is more likely to be yeast fermentation than something bacterial. That means that it’s unlikely to make you sick. It will start to taste less sweet (because the yeast is converting sugar to alcohol), and may have a slight boozy taste to it.
edit: “If it is not…sweet…”
If you bought fresh pineapple, it should be fresh :)
Pineapples actually aid in digestion and prevent blood coagulation and ease inflammation. To know if it is bad it will smell like it is frementing and probably taste much like the others have said kind of boozy and maybe even have an unpleasant odor.
A strong sweet smell is ideal. :)
P.S. Frementing fruit is how they make the toilet wine aka “pruno” in prison. :X
People. I bought pineapple that wasn’t canned, is what I meant. Who are you really, @nofurbelowsbatgirl? Jeruba? ;)
@Mama_Cakes: @Jeruba has other people do her frementing (sic) for her.
@Mama_Cakes lol my brain is pretty fremented..no pun intended @Jeruba :/ lol
