Is Hulu Plus worth it?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) April 11th, 2013

I currently have Netflix streaming and I love it. The best part is no commercials. I heard Hulu Plus has commercials, even though you pay for their service. That is the only thing preventing me from signing up with them. However, I did just check their site and they have one of my favorite shows, Castle, which Netflix does not.
Do you have Hulu Plus and do you like it?

No. And Hulu is about to be purchased by someone else, and its offerings and pricing will surely change. I would stay away from it.

Keep in mind that Hulu is not independent at all. They are owned by cable channels and move companies. Which means they will never have the independence and moxie to do cool things like Netflix does.

Don’t waste your money.

I have Hulu plus. I don’t subscribe to Netflix because I can’t watch it at work (Can’t seem to find a good way to ask for Admin permissions to my work computer to download Microsoft Silverlight, which is needed to watch Netflix)

I don’t subscribe to cable, nor do I have an antenna at home. All of my TV access is through Hulu Plus. I watch Vikings, The Following, Grey’s Anatomy, and tons of old stuff I love – Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Star Trek (every episode, every series), documentaries…

For $8 a month, it’s totally worth it to me. Yes, commercials are a tad annoying, but it’s not prohibitively so.

Hulu+ offers a free one-week trial.

The commercials are short, with 1–3 every commercial break… perhaps 2 commercial breaks per half hour show. Far less than the commercials on broadcast television.

We use Hulu+ daily in our house.

I don’t have an antenna or use cable/satellite service, so Hulu is the primary way I get television through my Roku box. I love it, and I think it’s absolutely worth the cost.

$7 a month is not enough to cover for the high ongoing production costs of running a network, and producing high quality shows, that’s why there are ads to make up for it. But they are far less of a pain because they in total only take up to 45–90 seconds, while the typical TV break is 180–300 seconds. The only thing irritating about it is that it’s typically the same sponsors. I’m sick of Chase.

If you like Korean Dramas the selection is staggering.

What about the selection? Is it worth having both Netflix and Hulu plus? Netflix has a lot of shows, but not nearly enough if you enjoy a wide variety of programs.

I was going to ask this as a separate question til I saw this, maybe one of you is still following.

We have both Netflix and Hulu Plus. We use Hulu for the day after new shows come out and Netflix for movies and/or boredom.

Thank you, @Cupcake. I’ll probably look into signing up in a few days. Thanks.

Netflix does have a lot of TV shows, but hulu has more variety and because of it being more incahoots with the TV networks gets them a lot faster. Hulu also has access to a greater selection of international stuff as well. And conversely, Hulu does have movies, but a much weaker and limited selection compared to netflix. And Both have series that are exclusive to themselves like Netflix’s House of Cards.

I don’t see them as competing, both compliment each other pretty well. I have Amazon prime too, but I always find their selection lacking against either service.
